Islanders Drop Heartbreaker to UTPA, 58-56

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team (2-5) dropped a heartbreaker to Texas-Pan American (2-5) in the final 3.3 seconds Tuesday night at the American Bank Center, falling 58-56.  Senior Myeisha Myles' layup and free throw with eight seconds evened the score at 56-56. With time winding down, UTPA's Bianca Torre dished it to Adanna Opara for the winning bucket in the paint to end the game.

Junior Alisa Roberts led the Islanders with a season-high 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and junior Verne'qua Taylor added 10 points and tied a season-high six assists. Junior Jessica Jammer paced the Islanders on the glass with eight boards. Senior Myeisha Myles added three blocks and Roberts led the team with four steals.   

The Broncs were powered by four players in double digits, led by Opara's 15 points and nine rebounds. Bianca Torre added 13 points and Donna Jackson posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. LaQuita Garner had 10 points including 2-of-6 from behind the arc.

The Islanders shot 40.4 percent from the field (21-52), 25.0 percent from behind the arc (4-16) and 62.5 percent from the charity stripe (10-16). The Islanders scored 28 bench points to the Broncs' four and outrebounded UTPA 44 to 39.

UTPA turned the Islanders' season-high 29 turnovers into 21 points while making 36 of their 58 points in the paint.

The Islanders took their biggest lead of the half at the 9:04 mark on a 12-0 run. Marquesha Anderson-Sparks hit two free throws and Taylor's jumper gave the Islanders their first lead of the half. Roberts added a jumper and Brandi Huff added two free throws to jumpstart the Islanders with 10:43 to play. Huff followed with a jumper off a Jammer pass inside and Taylor's inside dish to Vega-Vega capped the 12-0 run with the Islanders leading 14-3 with 9:02 left.  

The Broncs answered with a 7-0 run at the 8:27 mark. Torre's jumper and 3-pointer brought the Broncs within five with 8:05 to play. The Broncs extended their run to seven on a jumper by Cassandra Moody to get within three.  

In the second half, the Broncs took their first lead since the 17:27 mark in the first with a layup by Torre.

Taylor's 3-pointer from Jammer gave the Islanders a 53-51 lead and their first lead since the 17:16 mark in the second half. The Broncs responded with a jumper by Franchesca Simon to even the score at 53-53. Erin Lewis's layup and Opara's free throw put the Broncs back up by three with 22 seconds to play. Myles' layup tied the game at 56 before Opara's game winning layup.

The Islanders took a 25-23 lead into halftime on 30.8 percent shooting. Zoe Vega-Vega led the Islanders with six points and Taylor chipped in five. Jammer led the half with six boards. Garner paced the Broncs with eight points on 3-of-9 shooting and Opara added six points.

The Islanders will travel back to Houston to compete in the Rice Tournament this weekend. The Islanders will face Rice on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. before facing Oregon State/North Texas on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 5 p.m./7 p.m.
