CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team will open its 2011-12 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. against Big 12 foe Missouri at the Dugan Wellness Center. The Islanders return six players and will feature seven newcomers, three freshmen and four junior college transfers.
"I think the kids are excited to play against an opponent other than themselves," head coach Robert Robinson said. "We have a very strong preseason schedule and it will give us a chance to see where we are against quality teams. We can then step back and look at film to see where our weaknesses stand and see where we are at."
The Islanders return one starter from last season's team in Jessica Jammer and are looking to make strides in the Southland Conference after being hindered with injuries a year ago. Along with Jammer, the Islanders are anticipating the return of redshirt senior Myeisha Myles in the post. Also returning are senior Zoey Vega-Vega, junior Imani Dunn and sophomores Taryn Gregory and Brandi Huff.
The Islanders are set to take on Big 12 foe Missouri in their season opener at the Dugan Wellness Center. The last time the Islanders opened the season against a Big 12 opponent was during the 2006-07 season when they played Missouri in Columbia, Mo.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Saturday's game will mark only the second time the two teams have met. Missouri won both its exhibitions, topping Truman State and Missouri-St. Louis at home. Christine Flores led the Tigers with 17 points and Liene Priede added 16 points against Truman St., while BreAnna Brock had 29 vs. Missouri-St. Louis.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi opened the season at Missouri during the 2006-07 season under coach Robinson's first season. The Tigers bested the Islanders 89-60.
The Islanders will debut seven newcomers on Saturday, including junior college transfer Verne'qua Taylor. Joining Taylor will be her JC teammate sophomore Marquesha Anderson-Sparks, along with JC transfers Alisa Roberts and Damequia Montgomery. The Islanders will add some much needed depth in freshmen Sara Alva, Trish Amboree and Mariah Jordan.
The Islanders were picked to finish last in the Southland West division after finishing last in the conference last season.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will play a tough schedule this season, including their first three contests. The Islanders will take on Missouri, Pac-12 opponent Colorado and Big Ten foe Indiana. They will also participate in the Houston Baptist and Rice Tournaments. The Islanders host 12 games, including four which will be played at the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders will continue their home slate on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. against Pac-12 opponent Colorado at the American Bank Center. Click here for Islanders Basketball tickets.
