Women's Basketball Unveils 2011-12 Schedule
The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's basketball team will open the season by hosting two BCS-conference teams while participating in tournaments at Houston Baptist and Rice as part of a tough 2011-12 schedule, the school announced on Tuesday.
"Overall we are pretty pleased with our schedule," said head coach. "We have more home games this year and a lot less travel. It is going to be competitive, the first three are pretty tough, but we have a chance to be pretty successful if we take care of our business heading into the conference season."
The Islanders kick off the season by hosting Big 12 opponent Missouri on Saturday, Nov. 12, in the Dugan Wellness Center on campus at 7 p.m. Four days later, the team will welcome Pac 12 member Colorado to the American Bank Center for a Wednesday, Nov. 16, contest. The Buffaloes participated in the 2011 WNIT, advancing to the quarterfinals.
After two games at home to open the season, the Islanders travel to play Arkansas State on Nov. 20 before returning to the ABC on Nov. 22, where they will host Iona at 5 p.m. Next up on the slate is the Houston Baptist Tournament on Nov. 25-26, where Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is scheduled to play Texas Southern and HBU.
The Islanders then return home for a Tuesday night game against Texas – Pan American on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. before returning to Houston for another tournament. This time, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will play at the Rice Tournament on Dec. 2-3 in Houston, starting with the Owls with the second opponent to be determined. The Islanders will then travel to Edinburg for a Dec. 7 game against UTPA before coming home to play Jackson State on Dec. 16 in the DWC after finals.
Nearing the end of 2011, the Islanders travel to Dallas on Dec. 18 to face SMU and travel to Bloomington, Ind., on Dec. 27 to play Indiana in the final non-conference game before the start of the Southland Conference schedule.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will face defending Southland Conference Champion McNeese State to begin league play, traveling to Lake Charles, La. for a Jan. 7 game. After facing McNeese, the Islanders return home for a pair of home games, starting with UTSA on Jan. 11 before playing Southeastern La. three days later on Jan. 14, with both games coming at the ABC.
UT Arlington is up next for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Jan. 18 for a single road game. The Islanders then host Sam Houston State on Jan. 21 in the DWC before hitting the road once again for a pair of games. First up is a short drive to San Marcos to face Texas State on Jan. 25 before heading to Stephen F. Austin on Jan. 28 in Nacogdoches.
The Islanders return home to host a pair of Louisiana schools, taking on Nicholls on Feb. 1 and Northwestern State on Feb. 4 in their Homecoming game. Following the Feb. 4 game, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi gets a week off before returning to action on Feb. 11 against Sam Houston in Huntsville. Next up for the Islanders is a home contest against Texas State on Feb. 15 before facing WNIT-participant Lamar (Feb. 18) and UTSA (Feb. 22) on the road.
SFA makes a return trip to Dugan on Feb. 25 while UTA comes to town on Feb. 29 before the Islanders close the regular season with a road game in Conway, Ark., on March 3 against Central Arkansas. Following the conclusion of the regular season, the Southland Conference Tournament will take place in Katy from March 6-9 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center.
All conference home games are set for a 7 p.m. start, while game times for several home and road contests are still yet to be determined. Tipoff times are scheduled to change.
