CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team picked up its second win in-a-row on Wednesday night, taking an 84-70 win over Texas - Pan American to avenge an earlier loss in the season. The Islanders are now 2-11 heading into the Southland Conference opener against McNeese State on Saturday at the American Bank Center.
Several record were set as the Islanders as a team made a school-record 36 free throws, besting the previous high of 31 in a game. In addition to the team record, two players also set new personal highs on the night.
Jessica Jammer and Adrienne Scott had career nights for the home team. Jammer did so in points with a total of 25 in the game. She topped her previous high of 15 points with 16 of her total in the first half. Scott set a new best in rebounds with 16 and just missed tying her career-high in points with 19 on the night.
In the first half, UTPA opened the scoring with a three pointer and led by as many as five points at 11-6. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi reeled off five-straight points to knot the score at 11-11. Following another Lady Broncs three-point shot, the Islanders took their first lead of the game on a pair of Jammer free throws to give the Islanders a 15-14 advantage with 13:29 left in the first half. She went on to score 11 points in the first 11 minutes of the half and finished with a career-high 16 at the break.
Jammer hit a three at the 5:34 mark to extend the lead to 29-26 while Lauren Smith and Jade Davis added to it with a pair of free throws each to make it 33-26. The lead reached seven at 38-31 on a pair of Jammer free throws with under a minute left, but three free throws by UTPA to end the scoring and head into halftime with a 38-34 score.
UTPA cut the lead to two points to open the second half as the teams traded points to a 45-42 lead for the Islanders. The home team scored nine-straight points to take their biggest lead of the night, a 12-point advantage at 54-42 with 12:47 left in the game. The Lady Broncs scored 10-of-11 points to cut the lead to just three once again with 10 minutes left in the contest. A three-point shot by Davis extended the lead back to six with just over nine minutes on the clock to start a run. Jammer hit another three with 8:30 left to make it a nine-point lead. A pair of free throws by Anitra Jeffery extended the lead back to 12 points at 71-59 with four minutes left in the game.
The Lady Broncs closed to within seven points at 74-67 in the final two minutes, but Texas A&M - Corpus Christi finished strong, extending the lead to 14 points at the final buzzer and taking an 84-70 win heading into league play.
Davis added a season-high 14 points as the third player in double digits for the home team. The Islanders out-rebounded UTPA 43-38 in the game.
