Islanders fall to Robert Morris in opening game of Gator Holiday Classic

Gainesville, Fla. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team was unable to slow the inside game of Robert Morris in the opening game of the Gator Holiday Classic held at the O'Connell Center on the University of Florida campus. RMU scored 42 of its 73 points in the paint to take a 73-47 win on Monday evening.

The Islanders fall to 0-9 on the season while the Colonials improved their win streak to four games and are now 4-5 overall. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will move on to play the loser of either Alabama State or Florida, the second game of the night.

Lauren Smith led the team in scoring with 10 points and was the only player for the Islanders to score in double digits. Ashley Darley was second on the team with eight points and tied for the team lead at five rebounds with Jessica Jammer.

Jade Davis hit a three-point shot to open the game and gave her team an early 3-0 lead. The Colonials gained the lead at 6-5 before Darley gave Texas A&M - Corpus Christi the lead once again at 7-6 with 16 minutes left in the half. It would be the last lead they would hold, as the Colonials scored nine-straight points to take a 15-7 lead at the 13:28 mark. RMU kept widening the gap throughout the half, eventually taking a 37-15 advantage into the break.

In the second half, it was relatively close as the Colonials outscored the Islanders 36-32 in the deciding period. The lead was cut to as low as 18 points after a layup and pair of free throws from Smith made it 54-36 in favor of RMU with 9:04 left in the game. The team was unable to sustain the momentum however, as it was a stretched to as many as 29 with 4:33 left in the game before playing to the 73-47 final.

Yannis Koutroupis will call the action between the Islanders and either Florida or Alabama State on Tuesday afternoon.
