The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team will be facing off against another first-time opponent on Monday when they take part in the first day of the Gator Holiday Classic, hosted by the University of Florida. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the O'Connell Center on the Florida campus.
The Islanders come into the game with an 0-8 record and are looking for the first win of the season against a Robert Morris team that is now 3-5 on the season after losing its first five games and coming back to win the last three, including a 66-52 win over Virginia Tech heading into the tournament.
Last time out for the Islanders, they lost a 63-54 to St. Edward's on Thursday at the Dugan Wellness Center. It was just the third home game of the season for the team and they now hit the road once again for four more games before returning home on Jan. 8 to host the McNeese State Cowgirls to start Southland Conference play.
Lauren Smith is the leading scorer for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi at 12.4 points per game heading into the tournament. Adrienne Scott is second with a 10.8 average in four games after coming back from an injury, including a season-high 17 points against SEU. Anitra Jeffery continues to lead the team in rebounding with a 9.6 rebounds per game average this season.
The Colonials are led in scoring by Yohanna Morton at 13.5 ppg, followed by Kristine Silaraja with 11.6 ppg and Artemis Spanou at 11.4 per game as the players averaging double digits for RMU. Mary Durojaye leads the team with an 8.1 rebounds per game average while Spanou is second at 7.8 rebounds a contest.
After the game on Monday, the two teams will move on to face either Florida or Alabama State on Tuesday. The winner of each game will play while the losing teams will face off against one another.
