Islanders remain winless following 63-54 setback to St. Edward's

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (0-8) was unable to get into the win column following a 63-54 defeat against St. Edward's University(7-4) at the Dugan Wellness Center on Thursday night. Adrienne Scott was the high scorer for the Islanders with a season-high 17 points.

In addition to Scott, Ashley Darley and Lauren Smith scored in double figures with 10 points apiece. Anitra Jeffery had a team-high 11 rebounds in the contest.

Darley opened the scoring for the Islanders to give them the early 2-0 lead. The Hilltoppers scored seven-of-nine points to take an early 9-4 lead. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi came back to tie the score at 16-16 on a Jade Davis jumper with 7:15 left in the opening period.

Jeffery gave the home team the lead at 18-16 and the Islanders took a 24-22 lead late in the half on a Darley basket. SEU finished the scoring with a three-pointer by Haley Tidwell to give the Hilltoppers a 25-24 lead at the break.

Leading scorers for the Islanders in the first half were Darley and Scott with six points each while Smith had four of her own. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi had four points on fast break opportunities in the opening half.

Three-point shots carried SEU in the second half as they made 6-of-11 to take control of the game.

The Islanders trailed 31-26 just over a minute into the second half before tying the game up at 31 with 14:32 left in the game. Jade Davis and Smith each hit layups, followed by Jeffery hitting two free throws to tie the game. The Hilltoppers broke the tie with a 6-0 run before Smith hit a three to cut the lead in half at 37-34.

Scott got Texas A&M - Corpus Christi to within 44-39 with under ten minutes to play on a three-point play at the 9:16 mark.

The deficit would be cut down to 48-44 before a three pointer by SEU put the visitors up 51-44 with 6:22 to play. Brittany Ward hit a three pointer with 1:34 left to give St. Edward's a 59-50 advantage as the Islanders were trying to mount a comeback.

Scott hit a layup to cut the deficit to 61-54 with just 59 seconds remaining. SEU made its free throws in the final minute to claim the 63-54 victory.

Next up for the Islanders will be Robert Morris at 4 p.m. CT on Monday, Dec. 20 in Gainesville, Fla. at the Gator Holiday Classic.
