Islanders suffer 90-57 loss to Colorado State in Rocky Mountain Invitational

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team suffered a 90-57 loss at the hand of tournament-host Colorado State on Sunday to finish play in the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational.

Lauren Smith was named to the all-tournament team after scoring a team-high 14 points in consecutive games, but the Islanders gave up too many points inside as they were out-rebounded by a 58-37 margin while allowing 46 points in the paint. The team falls to 0-6 on the season while Colorado State improved to 4-2 this year.

In the first half, the Islanders got on the board first on a layup by Smith, but fell behind following a 9-0 run by the Rams to make it 9-2 at the 16-minute mark. CSU methodically built a lead, going ahead by as many as 22 points at 38-16 with 3:30 lead to play in the opening period. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi could only cut the deficit to 17 points after an Anitra Jeffery layup with three second left made it 44-27 heading into the break.

Adrienne Scott, playing in just her second game back from injury, led the team in scoring and rebounding with seven points and five boards in the half. Jeffery and Zoey Vega-Vega each had four rebounds each while Smith was second in scoring with six points.

The Rams continued gaining momentum in the second half, scoring the first six points to open up a 50-27 advantage. The Islanders were able to cut the deficit to 19 points on several occasions, with the last coming at the 13:23 mark following a layup by Louvinia Robinson.

From that point on, CSU stretch the lead to as many 37 points at 84-47 with 4:52 to go in the game. Five-straight points by the Islanders got them to within 84-53, but it would get no closer before ending in a 90-57 final.

Vega-Vega just missed the first double-double of her career, grabbing 10 rebounds while scoring nine points. Taryn Gregory was the only other player in double-digits for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi after scoring 10 points.

Next up for the Islanders will be a Sunday, December 5 game on the road against Houston. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
