FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team took a tough 77-66 loss against Boise State in the opening game of the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational on the campus of Colorado State. The loss sends the Islanders to 0-5 on the season while the Broncos improved to 4-2 on the year.
Lauren Smith led the Islanders with 14 points as the two teams battled throughout the game before the Broncos put the game away in the final minutes. Zoey Vega-Vega scored a career-high 12 points while Jade Davis added 12 as well for her highest-scoring game of the year.
In the first half, the Islanders made six shots from behind the three-point line to help power their way to a one-point halftime lead at 34-33 over the Broncos. Davis led the way with 10 points after making a trio of three-point shots. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi also got triples from Smith and Jessica Jammer, as well as one from Vega-Vega with 1:17 left to give the Islanders the final lead of opening half.
Early in the period, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi led by as many as six points following Jammer's three-pointer, giving her team a 13-7 lead with 14:19 left in the first. The Broncos worked their way back with a 7-0 run to take a 14-13 lead at the 12:31 mark. A made free throw by Davis evened the score at 14-14 before Boise State made another run, this time a 6-0 burst to take a 20-14 lead. The Islanders trailed by as many as eight points at 24-16 with 6:52 left until the half before starting their run. Smith cut it to six with a pair of made free throws ahead of layups by Louvinia Robinson and Brandi Huff to make it 30-28 in favor of the Broncos. A Davis three gave her team a brief 25-24 lead with 5:29 to go.
The two teams battled back-and-forth in the final five minutes, trading the lead six times before Vega-Vega's three-pointer gave Texas A&M - Corpus Christi the halftime advantage at 34-33.
The Broncos came out on fire in the second half, scoring the first nine points before a jumper by Jammer got the Islanders on the board. Boise State led by as many as 10 points before made jumpers by Ashley Darley and Jammer and Smith going 3-of-4 from the free throw line to cut it to a three-point lead at 48-45.
Another Vega-Vega three cut the advantage to just one point at 53-52 with 10:34 left in the game, but Texas A&M - Corpus Christi was unable to grab the lead until a jumper by Robinson made it 56-55 in favor of the Islanders with 8:02 remaining. Vega-Vega gave the team its biggest lead of the half with a jumper from the corner to make it 60-57 with 6:53 to go in the game.
A Broncos layup at 3:49 gave Boise a 66-65 lead that they would never relinquish. Over the final four minutes, the Islanders scored just one point as BSU outscored them 13-1 to finish the game with a 77-66 final.
Next up for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi is a 3:30 p.m. game against host Colorado State on Sunday afternoon. The game will be called by Yannis Koutroupis and will be on SportsRadio Corpus Christi 1230 AM. It will also be simulcast on 103.3 and 96.1 FM in the Corpus Christi area.
