EDINBURG - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team fell to 0-4 on Saturday afternoon following a 70-57 loss to Texas - Pan American at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Despite career-highs in both points (18) and rebounds (19) from Anitra Jeffery, the Islanders were unable to keep up with the Broncs.
In addition to Jeffery's double-double, Jessica Jammer scored 11 points and Jade Davis score 10 to lead the Islanders effort. CeMonay Newell led all scorers after scoring 21 points for UTPA.
In the first half, the Broncs scored the first seven points before Texas A&M - Corpus Christi went on a 6-1 run after a pair of layups by Jeffery and one from Davis to make it 8-6 in favor of UTPA. The Broncs then extended their lead to eight points at 18-10. The Islanders were able to close to within three points on a layup by Jeffery with 2:06 left in the period to cut the lead to 26-23, but the home team extended their lead back to eight at 33-25 headed into the break.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi scored the first bucket of the second half on a Davis jumper to cut the lead to six as they tried to get back within striking distance of the Broncs. With the score at 38-32, the Broncs extended the advantage to 10 points and were ahead by 17 midway through the final period. The largest disparity of the game was at 68-47 with 2:59 left, but the Islanders showed fight in the closing minutes, cutting the deficit to 70-57 to end the game.
Next up for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will be the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational beginning on Nov. 27, the Saturday after Thanksgiving holiday. The tournament will be held in Fort Collins, Colo. and will see the Islanders play Boise State on Nov. 27 and host Colorado State on Nov. 28 to close the tournament.
