CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (0-1) women's basketball team could not overcome cold shooting that led to an early deficit and a 69-59 defeat against Arkansas State (1-0) in the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Tip-Off Tournament. Lauren Smith was the leading scorer for the Islanders with 22 points.
Smith and Jade Davis finished in double figures for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, with Davis contributing 12 points in the loss.
In the first half, the Islanders shot 26.9 percent from the field and trailed 34-17 at the intermission. Smith had a team-high five points while Anitra Jeffery had six first-half rebounds. Turnovers were the story of the first half with Texas A&M - Corpus Christi committing 21 and leading to 17 of the Red Wolves 34 points.
The Islanders improved their offensive output in the second half and forced Arkansas State into nine second-half turnovers that led to 11 points for the home team.
Smith hit back-to-back threes to pull Texas A&M - Corpus Christi within 11 points at 63-52 with 1:50 left in the contest. The Red Wolves were able to make free throws in the closing minutes to salt away the game. Smith hit a three as time expired, leaving the final deficit at 69-59.
Jeffery was the only Islanders player with double-digit rebounds after grabbing 12 rebounds on the night. Smith was the second-leading rebounder with seven in the game. The Islanders posted a 44-38 edge on the glass in the contest.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi returns to action on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the second day of the Tip-Off Tournament against Southern University.
