CORPUS CHRISTI - Anitra Jeffery finished one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds, but the Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi women's basketball team (0-2) found itself on the wrong end of a 73-51 decision against Southern on Saturday, Nov. 13, at the American Bank Center. Tiffany Foster scored a game-high 18 points for the Jaguars (1-1) in the consolation game of the Holiday Inn-Emerald Beach Islanders Tip-Off Tournament.
No. 22 Iowa was the victor in the Classic, defeating Arkansas State in the championship game, 50-47. Kachine Alexander was named Most Valuable Player for her efforts for the Hawkeyes, and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammate Kamille Wahlin, Arkansas State's Ne Ne Hurst and Quinishia McDowell, Southern's Hanna Kador and Jeffery for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
With the Islanders short on post players due to injury, Southern was able to take advantage on the boards, grabbing 25 offensive boards and holding a 57-34 advantage for the game. Laneisha Stephens led the way for Southern with 12 caroms in the contest.
Early on, the two squads went tit-for-tat , with Southern taking an early 10-7 lead. But it was the Jaguars who put together the game's first run at that point, ticking off a 9-0 run to build a 19-7 lead, its biggest of the opening frame.
The Islanders showed resilience before the break, though, turning a 24-14 deficit into a 26-25 lead with a 12-1 run of their own. The hosts used strong defense to hold Southern to 0-for-3 shooting and force three turnovers during the rally. Brandi Huff provided the biggest shot of the run, drilling a three for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi to give the Islanders the lead. But then it was the Jaguars who used the three-ball at the end of the half, as they buried four-straight triples to end the period on a 12-0 run and take a 40-30 lead heading into the locker room.
After the break, the Southern defense rallied against the Islanders, keeping them at bay with an 18-7 run to begin the half. From there, the Jaguars were able to finish off the victory, shooting 42.9 percent after the break.
Other top scorers for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi were Jessica Jammer with eight points and Jade Davis with seven.
The Islanders will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 17, when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., for a matchup with Big XII foe Kansas. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. in historic Allen Fieldhouse.
