The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's team rallied from 11 points down late in the second half to take a 72-66 win over UT Arlington in a Southland Conference contest at the American Bank Center. The Islanders ran their win streak to three games and, coupled with a Lamar loss to Central Arkansas, moved into a first-place tie with the Lady Cardinals.
TAMUCC is now 14-6 overall and 6-1 in Southland games. The Mavericks fall to 8-12 on the year, 3-4 in Southland contests.
Jade Davis once again led the way for the Islanders, scoring 16 points and grabbing five rebounds as the team continued to find a way to win after trailing late. Myeisha Myles and Lauren Smith each provided double-digit scoring with 14 apiece. Elisa Beagle and Deziree Green reached double-digit rebounds, Green grabbing 11 while Beagle pulled in 10 on the night.
In the first half, the two teams struggled to gain separation from one another with neither team leading by more than five points. The Mavericks led for most of the period with the Islanders going nearly 10 minutes without holding the lead. They finally gained the advantage back on an Anitra Jeffery lay-up at the 7:28 mark. After another quick lead change, the Islanders scored with 1:15 left in the half and held onto the lead to go into halftime up by a 35-33 score.
Myles did most of the damage for the Islanders, scoring 12 points in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and going 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Green pulled down seven rebounds to lead TAMUCC at the half while Myles grabbed five of her own.
In the second half, UTA raced out to as much as an 11-point lead with just 7:58 left in the game before TAMUCC finally righted the ship. The Islanders cut into the Maverick lead by clamping down on the defensive end and making the most of their free throw opportunities. They were 16-for-24 from the charity stripe in the second half, including a perfect 8-of-8 by Davis and 7-for-8 by Scott.
The Islanders finally retook the lead for good with just 52 second left in the game on a Davis lay-up. On the ensuing in-bounds play, UTA bounced the ball off of one of their player's foot to turn the ball over to TAMUCC. The Islanders took control from that point on, stretching the lead to six points for the eventual 72-66 final score.
The Islanders out-rebounded the Mavericks by 20, holding a 51-31 advantage at the end of the contest.
The first-place Islanders are next in action this Saturday afternoon when they travel to Thibodaux, La. to take on Nicholls. The game is set for a 2 PM start.
