ISLANDERS SURVIVE OVERTIME TO PICK UP WIN AGAINST BEARKATS
Huntsville - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's team needed overtime but were able to pull out another Southland Conference victory over the Sam Houston Bearkats on Saturday afternoon. The Islanders picked up a 76-69 win after trailing for the better part of the game.
The Islanders improve to 13-6 overall and 5-1 in Southland games while Sam Houston State falls to 5-13 on the year, 2-4 in Southland contests.
Jade Davis led the team in scoring with 18 while Lauren Smith scored a career-high 17 points. Adrienne Scott also scored 17 as the Islanders. Deziree Green recorded a career-high 15 rebounds, Scott had 13 and Myeisha Myles finished with 10 on the afternoon. TAMUCC out-rebounded SHSU by a 59-38 margin.
In the first half, the Islanders took an early lead by as many as six points but were unable to keep pace with the Bearkats. A three-point shot by Sam Houston gave them their first lead at 8:25 left in the half, a lead they would retain throughout the remainder of the period and into halftime.
The lead grew to as many as eight points at a 30-22 score before a late Islander run closed the gap to four points at halftime. A pair of back-to-back lay-ups by Smith in the final 30 seconds put the score at 32-38 heading into the break.
The Islanders missed several opportunities in the first half, shooting just 9-of-18 from the free throw line while the Bearkats were a perfect 7-for-7 from the line. Their percentage from the field was nearly as good as from the line, going 9-for-20 for 45 percent shooting in the half while SHSU was held to 32 percent shooting. The Islanders took just 20 shots compared to the Bearkats 34 in the half. The Islanders out-worked SHSU on the boards for a 23-16 rebounding advantage.
Smith was the leading scorer in the first half for the Islanders, scoring nine points on 2-of4 shooting from the field and going 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Scott scored eight points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field. Green and Scott tied for the halftime lead with six rebounds apiece.
The second half saw the Islanders fall behind by as many as 12 points at 47-35 with 15 minutes left in the period. TAMUCC would slowly claw their way back into the game, taking their first lead of the half at the 5:04 mark on a pair of made free throws by Scott. The lead was short lived as SHSU came down the court and hit a three pointer to regain the advantage. After the Islanders built a five-point lead with just 58 seconds left, the Bearkats scored the final five of the half to send the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, the Islanders lived from the free throw line, making 9-of-10 from the stripe to go with two made baskets. TAMUCC held the Bearkats to just six points to turn a 63-63 tie after regulation into 76-69 final.
The Islanders are back in action next Wednesday when they host UT Arlington in their annual Pink Zone game at the American Bank Center. Tip-off is set for 7 PM.
