ISLANDERS COME FROM BEHIND TO SURVIVE SCARE AGAINST BOBCATS
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball survived a scare from the Texas State Bobcats Wednesday night on Stripes Court to improve to 2-0 in the Southland Conference. The Islanders took a 78-72 victory after trailing for most of the game and taking the lead with just 1:15 left in the contest.
TAMUCC is now 10-5 overall and 2-0 in Southland games. TXST falls to 4-9 on the year, 0-2 in SLC contests. They were able to get their 10th win of the season behind 30 points from Jade Davis and a pair of doubles-doubles from Adrienne Scott and Elisa Beagle. It is the first time that the Islanders have beaten Texas State in the regular season since joining the conference before the 2006-07 season and they are now 4-7 all-time against the Bobcats.
"This was a big win for our kids, not only because it puts us at 2-0 in the Southland but also because we were 0-6 against this team in the regular season since joining the conference," said head coach Robert Robinson. "It showed a lot of heart from our kids today."
Davis scored 18 points after halftime to record her second 30-point game of the season, including the go-ahead three-point shot with 1:15 left in the game to give the Islanders the final lead of the night. It was just the second time in the deciding half that the Islanders took the lead. Beagle added another double-double, her fourth in the last six games and 23rd of her career, by scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. It was the eighth time this season that she has had 10-plus rebounds in a game. Scott recorded her second of the season with a 15 point, 11 rebound effort.
The Islanders rushed out to a 10-1 lead early in the first half but weres unable to keep up the intensity, soon falling behind to the Bobcats. Texas State went on a 9-0 run to knot the game 10-10 at the 13:24 mark. Scott scored the next bucket to give the Islanders the lead once again but the persistent Bobcats hung around until taking the lead at 18-16 with 9:30 left till halftime. TXST would lead by as many as six points at 34-28 before settling for a two-point 37-35 halftime lead.
In the second half, the two teams played evenly in the early going as the Bobcats maintained their lead and increased it back to six points four minutes into the period. The Islanders kept fighting back until eventually tying the game at 55-55 on a Davis three pointer with 7:58 left. They took a brief two-point lead until TXST scored four-straight to regain the advantage. It was back-and-forth the rest of the way with Texas State leading by as many as four points.
"The officials calling the game tight worked to our advantage in the second half," said Robinson. "I told our kids at halftime that whoever came out and was aggressive in the second half had the advantage.
"Sure enough it worked out to our advantage."
Shaye Montgomery hit a big three pointer with 3:53 left to cut the lead to just one point at 68-67 and Davis followed with another huge three to give the Islanders just their second lead since the 9:38 mark in the first half. This lead would stick however, as Beagle hit another lay-up and Deziree Green and Lauren Smith hit free throws to ice the game. Green made a pair while Smith made four, including the final two points of the game to make it a 78-72 final.
"I was very pleased with the effort, I told our kids that is why you play 40 minutes because for about 36 minutes we were behind in the ballgame," said Robinson. "It just took that one deep three by Shaye and we never really looked back at that point."
The Islanders are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 16 in Natchitoches, La. as they hit the road to take on fellow Southland unbeaten Northwestern State. Both teams come into the game with a 2-0 Southland record to start the conference schedule. Tip-off is set for a 2 PM start as Yannis Koutroupis calls the action for TAMUCC on ESPN 1230 AM.
