The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will play UT Arlington for the third time this season as the two teams are matched up in the first round of the 2009 State Farm Southland Conference Basketball Tournament. The tournament is being held in Katy for the second-straight season at the Merrell Center. The Islanders and the Mavericks tipoff at 6 PM on Wednesday, March 11.

This will be the third time the two teams have faced off this season and the Islanders will be looking to change their luck against the Mavericks, having lost the two previous contests. Their last meeting was the previous game as they went head-to-head in the final game of their regular seasons, with the Mavericks taking a 78-61 win.

The Islanders will be looking to continue their recent success in the tournament, as they have won their first round game of the tournament the two previous seasons, both coming against Texas State. Last season, the Islanders captured a 106-88 victory over the SLC regular season champions to advance to the second round.

Standing in their way this year are the UT Arlington Mavericks, the regular season champions of the SLC. They are currently 20-9 on the season and finished the year with a 14-2 mark in SLC action. The Islanders come into the game with an 11-18 record and a final SLC record of 6-10.

The Islanders are led in scoring by Jade Davis with a 12.8 points per game scoring average. Myeisha Myles adds 10 points per game for the Islanders while leading the team in rebounding with an 8.3 rebounds per game average. The Mavericks top scorer is Candice Champion, who leads the team with an 18.6 scoring average.
