Huntsville - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team got a big Southland Conference road win over the Sam Houston Bearkats by a 67-62 on Saturday afternoon. It was the second victory this season for the Islanders over the Bearkats.
The Islanders improve to 10-13 on the season and 5-5 in SLC play. The Bearkats fall to 7-16 and 4-6 in SLC action. Shaye Montgomery led the Islanders in scoring with 17 points, one of three Islanders to score in double figures.
"It was a big win on the road for us." said Head Coach Robert Robinson. "I thought we let one slip away last game and it was important to come back and get a win."
Lauren Smith opened the game with a layup for the Islanders, giving them the first lead of the day at 2-0. With the score 5-4 in favor of the Bearkats, the Islanders went on a 14-0 run over the next seven minutes to take an 18-5 lead. Jade Davis accounted for seven of those points while Smith hit a three-pointer while Myeisha Myles and Diandra Torres accounted for the other four points with two apiece.
"We moved the ball around well." said Robinson. "We did a good job getting it to the open person and we did well in transition."
Despite the large lead, the Bearkats were persistent, scoring the next 12 points and fighting back to within one point at 18-17 with 5:44 left to go in the first half. The two teams went back and forth the rest of the half, with the Bearkats tying the score momentarily at 24-24 with 2:17 left in the half. The Islanders were able to take back the lead before the end of the half however, going into the break up by three at 29-26.
In the second half, the two teams battled early before the Islanders started to pull away. TAMUCC extended their lead to 10 on a made Montgomery free throw at the 17:00 minute mark. Deziree Green hit a layup and a foul shot at the 8:24 mark to put the Islanders up by 13 at 54-41. Myles followed with two buckets to push the lead to 17 at 58-41 with 7:12 left.
The Bearkats once again tried to chip away at the lead, getting it down four points at 66-62 with 13 seconds left, but Montgomery would hit a free throw with 11 second left to finish the scoring at 67-62.
Montgomery had 17 while Myles added 15 and Smith put in 12. Myles and Adrienne Scott led the team with nine rebounds apiece while Smith, Montgomery and Green each added eight. Brittany Brooks led all scorers in the game with 19 points for the Bearkats.
The Islanders out rebounded the Bearkats by a 48-31 margin, a key to the game for TAMUCC.
"We did a good job getting to the ball and defending their shots." said Robinson. "We put pressure on them on defense and had some good things happen for us out there."
The Islanders return home on Wednesday to face off against UTSA in the "Pink Zone" game recognizing the WBCA's program to help spread awareness about and help combat breast cancer. Tipoff for the game is scheduled for 7 PM at the American Bank Center.
