ISLANDERS LOSE HEARTBREAKER AGAINST TEXAS STATE
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team let one get away from them against Texas State on Wednesday night, falling by a 66-62 final after being up by 14 in the second half.
The Islanders fall to 9-13 on the year and 4-5 in Southland Conference play while the Bobcats improve to 10-12, 4-6 in the SLC.
Jade Davis led the Islanders with a career-high 24 points while Lauren Smith added a career-high 14 points and Myeisha Myles put in a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
In the first half, both teams started off sluggishly, with the Bobcats taking an 8-7 lead after the first five minutes of the game. Jade Davis scored all seven points to that point for the Islanders to keep them close in the early going.
The Bobcats took a 21-15 lead at the 8:49 mark in the first half with the Islanders responding with a Louvinia Robinson jumper to bring it to 21-17. The Bobcats responded with back-to-back buckets to take a 25-17 lead with 7:22 left in the half.
The Islanders went on to outscore the Bobcats 15-9 over the final 7:21 of the half, with Davis adding six of those points, to tie the game at 34-34 heading into the break. Davis went into the break with 13 points to lead all scorers at the half.
In the second half, the Islanders came out on fire, outscoring the Bobcats 20-6 over the first six minutes of the period. Adrienne Scott started the scoring with a layup to put the Islanders up 36-34. The Bobcats answered with a layup to tie the score once again. Smith laid in a basket to give the Islanders a lead again at 38-36.
The Bobcats added a free throw to get within one at 38-37 when the Islanders added a pair of jumpers from Davis and Myles, a pair of free throws by Smith and another Davis jumper to give the Islanders a nine point lead at 46-37.
Another Bobcat free throw was the only thing to stem the tide, as the Islanders followed with a Smith three-pointer to give them their biggest lead yet at 49-38. A layup by the Bobcats pulled the lead to 49-40 before a Davis three-pointer and a Myles layup on a fast break gave TAMUCC their biggest lead of the game at 54-40 with 14:10 left in the game.
Following that Myles lay in, the tide dramatically turned against the Islanders. The Bobcats out scored the Islanders by a 26-8 margin over the last 14:10 of the game to take the final at 66-62. TSU scored five straight points to get within nine at 54-45 before the Islanders were able to get on the board again on a Davis jumper making it 56-45.
"We started to settle for jump shots and were not being as aggressive in the paint." said Head Coach Robert Robinson. ""We stopped penetrating and got outplayed physically in the later parts of the second half and once the momentum changed we could not get it back."
The Bobcats proceeded to score seven straight points to pull to within two points at 56-54. A Myles layup momentarily gave the Islanders relief before a pair of Bobcat layups tied the game at 58-58 with 6:01 left in the game.
The Bobcats took their first lead of the half on a Gabriell Mattox three-pointer, giving TSU a 61-58 lead. A Davis layup pulled the Islanders to within one and a Smith layup put TAMUCC back on top at 62-61 with 2:01 left in the game.
It was not meant to be however, as the Bobcats scored the last five points of the game to steal a victory on the road at 66-62.
"We have to be mentally tougher out there when it isn't going our way." said Robinson. "When the shots are not falling for us, we have to keep playing defense and stop taking breaks even if it is not going our way. This was a learning experience for us."
The Islanders were led in scoring by Davis with 24 points. Myles added 10 points and 11 rebounds while Smith also added double digits with 14 points. The Bobcats were led by Victoria Davis with 26 points.
TAMUCC returns to action this Saturday, Feb.14 when they play at Sam Houston State in Huntsville. Game time is set for a 2 PM tip off.
