ISLANDERS DOMINATE UTPA IN NON-CONFERENCE HOME GAME
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team won a non-conference home game against the Texas-Pan American Lady Broncs at the American Bank Center Wednesday night, taking a 54-35 decision in the midweek game.
"This was a good win for us tonight." said TAMUCC Head Coach Robert Robinson. "We got some good performances out of some people during our break from Southland Conference play."
In the first half, both teams started out slow, combining to score just 22 points over the first 14 minutes of the first half with the score tied at 11-11. Myeisha Myles led the way for the islanders early on, scoring five of those first 11 points.
Over the last six minutes of the half however, Louvinia Robinson made her presence known, scoring six points and dishing out two assists to Myles in the final 5:33 of the half. At the 5:33 mark, Robinson dished to Myles for a layup in the lane, tying the game at 13-13. At the 4:11 mark, Robinson made a no-look pass to Myles in the lane, who made a layup to give the Islanders a 15-13 lead.
After the Lady Broncs tied the game at 15-15, Robinson drew a foul and proceeded to make both of her free throws to make it 17-15 in favor of the Islanders. Lauren Smith got an offensive rebound and put it back in to give TAMUCC a 19-15 lead.
At the 1:46 mark, Robinson pulled down a defensive rebound and sprinted down the court, laying the ball in on the fast break to extend the lead to 21-15. TAMUCC extended the lead to 23-15 on two Robinson free throws, giving her six of the last eight Islanders points in the half. UTPA scored the final five points of the half to close the gap to 23-20 at halftime.
"We got a good effort out of Louvinia tonight." said coach Robinson. "She got out there and made some contributions handling the ball and scoring in the first half."
In the second half Myles picked up where she left off, scoring five points in the first 4:22. She started the scoring with a made free throw to make it 24-20. She then scored the next four points on consecutive layups to stretch the lead all the way to 28-20.
A pair of Jade Davis free throws put the score at 30-20 before the Lady Broncs broke into the score column in the second half to make it 30-22 with 14:57 left in the game.
Davis made a layup to put the score at 32-22 before UTPA scored seven-of-nine points to pull within 34-29. Back-to-back three-pointers by Shaye Montgomery stretched the lead back to eight at 40-29 with 10:23 left in the game.
Diandra Torres scored her first points of the night to extend the lead to 13 at 42-29. The Islanders stretched the lead to as many as 19 points with 2:17 left in the game at 54-35, which would also be the final score of the game.
The 15 points allowed by the Islanders in the second half ties a school record for fewest points allowed in the second half of a game. TAMUCC last accomplished that feat against Huston-Tillotson during the 2006 season.
"I thought we got a great effort on the defensive end tonight." said coach Robinson. "Even when we weren't scoring or when we had a big lead, we never let up on the defensive end."
Myles led the Islanders in scoring with 17 points to go along with six rebounds. Torres was the second-leading scorer on the night, adding a career-high nine points, besting her previous high of five points against the Lady Broncs in 2007. Adrienne Scott made a huge contribution on the boards for TAMUCC, collecting a game-high 11 rebounds on the night.
Adrienne was able to put up some good numbers on the defensive end." said coach Robinson. "The whole team was able to put up some good numbers rebounding."
The Islanders out-rebounded the lady Broncs by a 37-27 margin.
The Islanders are next in action on Saturday as they are set to host Sam Houston State at the American Bank Center. Game time is set for 7 PM.
"We got a good effort in this out-of-conference game during the week." said coach Robinson. "This keeps us in the swing of things and hopefully we will play this type of game again on Saturday."
