The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team got an important Southland Conference victory over Northwestern State by a score of 61-52 in their first home game since Nov. 24. The Islanders win snaps Northwestern State's win streak at four games.

The Islanders improved to 6-9 on the season and 2-1 in SLC play. Northwestern State fell to 10-6 on the year, 2-1 in SLC action.

Jade Davis once again provided a large part of the offense, going for 18 points to follow her career-high of 21 points in the last game against Texas State.

"We did a good job of matching Northwestern State's intensity from the opening tip." said Islander Head Coach Robert Robinson. "It was nice to be in front of the home crowd and I think the players responded to that."

The Islanders opened the scoring with a Sarah Davidson layup 36 seconds into the game, giving them a 2-0 lead. It would mark the only lead of the game, as the Islanders held the advantage throughout the entire game.

The scoring was fairly close early on, with the Islanders taking a 15-10 lead at the 10:08 mark of the first half to extend their lead to five on a Davis layup. At the 6:38 mark of the first half, Davis added four free throws in the span of 11 seconds to give the Islanders a nine-point lead at 24-15.

Less than a minute later, a Myeisha Myles layup added to the total, giving the Islanders a 26-25 advantage. The Lady Demons were able to shrink the lead to five points late in the half on a pair of free throws with 28 second left.

The free throws made the score 30-25 before a Davis jumper with nine seconds left in the half pushed the Islander lead back to seven at 32-25 going into halftime.

"I thought we came ready to play from the start of the game." said coach Robinson. "We played two complete halves and did a good job of attacking the basket."

In the second half, the Lady Demons were able to cut into the Islander lead early on. A three-pointer by the Lady Demons' Demetria White at the 14:52 mark of the second half cut the Islander lead to just two points at 35-33.

The Islanders responded quickly, getting a Shaye Montgomery three-pointer at the 14:21 mark to put them back up by five at 38-33. The Islanders held the lead steady until the 10 minute mark.

A pair of free throws each by Myles and Davis quickly extended the Islander lead to 10 points at 47-37. Lauren Smith quickly followed with a jumper to make it 49-37 in favor of TAMUCC.

Late in the game, the Lady Demons made a late push, getting to within three points at 53-50 on a Jessica McPhail three-pointer, but the Islanders were able to respond to the challenge.

The Islanders were able to make eight free throws over the last 1:52 of the game while holding the Lady Demons to just two points in the same span. Davis knocked down a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left to seal the victory and finish the scoring at 61-52 in favor of the Islanders.

"We came ready to play today and we were able to outwork them on the inside." said coach Robinson. "We took care of our business at home and we have another tough game that we have to take care of coming up against Lamar.

"In order to compete in this conference you have to take care of your games at home."

The Islanders were led in scoring by Davis with 18, while Myles added 12 points and nine rebounds. Adrienne Scott added nine points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the team. Montgomery was also one of the three Islanders to score in double digits, scoring 11 on the night.

The Islanders next take on Lamar on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at the American Bank Center. Game time is scheduled for a 7 PM tipoff.
