ISLANDERS LOSE SECOND GAME IN THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENT

Las Cruces, N.M. -- The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball lost their second game of the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic by a 74-47 score to host New Mexico State on Saturday night.

The loss sends the Islanders to 2-4 on the year while the Aggies of New Mexico State improve to 3-3 on the year.

In the early going, the two teams kept it relatively close with the score tied at 12-12. At that point, the Aggies scored the next five points to take a 17-12 lead and put some distance between the two teams.

The Islanders would not get discouraged despite getting down by as many as 11 with the score 25-14 at the 6:19 mark in the first half.

With the score 28-18 in favor of the Aggies, the Islanders outscored New Mexico State 6-2 over the last 2:03 to end the half down only 30-24. Sarah Davidson hit a jumper and Shaye Montgomery hit a pair of free throws to bring the score to 28-22.

After a pair of free throws by the Aggies to extend the score to 30-22, Nyesha Adams hit a jumper with no time left on the clock to make it 30-24 New Mexico State heading into halftime.

The Islanders out-shot the Aggies in the first half, shooting 37.5% (9-24) to the Aggies 35.3% (12-34). The Islanders made the only three-point shot for either team, going 1-for-4 while the Aggies were 0-for-6 in the half.

"We made some shots in the first half that we didn't get in the second half." said Head Coach Robert Robinson. "We shot 36% while they shot 56% in the second half.

In the second half, Jade Davis hit the initial shot for the Islanders to cut the lead to four points at 30-26, but the Islanders were never able to get any closer, as the Aggies went on a 24-9 run to put the game out of reach at 54-33.

The Aggies outscored the Islanders 44-23 in the second half to take a 74-47 victory.

"We missed some opportunities early in the second half and missed some shots we made in the first half." said Robinson. "We got worn down by their size in the second half of the game."

The Islanders had three players in double figures, led by Davis with 12 points. Davidson and Montgomery each scored 10 for the Islanders.

Adams added three assists to lead the Islanders while Myeisha Myles led the team with seven rebounds. Davidson, Davis and Montgomery added four apiece as the second leading rebounders for the Islanders.

The Islanders are back in action on Tuesday night, Dec. 2 as they travel to take on SMU in Dallas. Tip off is set for 7 PM.

"We have a quick turnaround for our game against SMU." said Robinson. "We have shown some definite improvement these last two games and look for that to continue against SMU."
