Top Moment #10: Islanders Softball Sweeps Lamar
The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team had the odds stacked against them going into the Lamar series in Beaumont, Texas, having never emerged victorious against the Lady Cardinals, who revived their program in 2013, but that didn't stop them.
After clinching their first Southland series win against Stephen F. Austin the previous weekend, the Islanders were looking to continue their success against the Lady Cardinals who, at the time, held the number two spot in the Southland standings.
In the opening game, freshman Liz Carter recorded a one-hit shutout to power the Islanders to a 3-0 victory, while senior Valerie Perez went a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game with five RBIs, including a three-run home run in the seventh to lift the Islanders to a 8-4 victory.
The Islanders carried the momentum over into the third and final game of the series to win 5-2 and pick up their first sweep of the season. Perez powered the Islanders' offense, going 2-for-2 with a home run, while Carter did not allow any runs until the top of the seventh. She registered five strikeouts in seven innings for her 10th victory of the season. Carter and Perez each earned Southland Conference weekly honors as pitcher and hitter of the week for their outstanding performances over the weekend.
