CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team will host its final Southland Conference home series of the season this weekend when it welcomes Sam Houston State to Chapman Field. After earning their first Southland Conference series sweep of the season last weekend over Lamar, the Islanders will look to carry its momentum against the Bearkats, who currently sit in second place in the Southland standings.

The Islanders (13-32, 8-12 SLC) will open the series on Saturday, April 26. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. with the series set to conclude on Sunday, April 27, at 12 p.m. The Islanders will honor seniors Valerie Perez, Constance Brandenburg, Laura Phillips and J.J. Jackson on Sunday.

A&M - Corpus Christi is coming off a pair of non-conference losses to No. 23 Texas A&M on Tuesday. Prior to that, Perez and freshman Liz Carter powered the Islanders to a sweep over Lamar to earn Southland Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week honors.

This season, Perez is leading the Islanders with a team-high .316 batting average and a team-best 43 hits. The senior has also chipped in 29 RBIs and six home runs. Dani Tefft has been an offensive threat on the bases, with a team-best 11 stolen bases (T-6th SLC). She is now just one stolen base away from breaking into the Islanders top-10 records for a single season. The sophomore has matched Andrea Simancas' career No. 10 record of 18 from 2006-09. Last season, Tefft registered seven stolen bases. She is right behind Perez with a .315 batting average and 41 hits. Freshman Brittney Morse has also been a strong power hitter in the Islanders' lineup. She is third on the team with a .320 batting average and has cranked a team-high seven home runs on the year.

Cassie Carroll has stepped up for the Islanders' bats as of late. The junior sent a solo home run over the center field wall against Lamar in the second game, before registering a three-run homer over the left center wall against Texas A&M for her second of the season.

In the circle, Carter (10-17) has tallied a 4.75 ERA in 176.2 innings while striking out 91 batters to lead the Islanders. The Austin, Texas native has started in 27 games, which ties Amanda Burton and Melanie Drews at No. 9 in the Islanders top-10 records for a single season. She has also posted 17 complete games which ties Drews at No. 7 in the top-10 records for a single season. Carter is three appearances shy of breaking into the records for a single season, she currently has 33 on the year, and is three starts away from breaking into the Islanders career top-10 list.

The Islanders will face the Bearkats who come into Saturday's opening game with a 24-21 record, including a 13-8 Southland mark. Sam Houston State fell to Texas Southern, 6-4, Wednesday night in a non-conference game. Prior to that, they won two out of three against Abilene Christian to clinch the series. As a team, the Bearkats are hitting .283 with three players hitting over .300. Cecilia Castillo leads the team with a .356 batting average and a team-best 47 hits and 12 doubles. The last time the two teams met was last season at Chapman Field. The Islanders split the first two games of the series with the Bearkats, before dropping an 8-5 rubber match in eight innings.

Following Sunday's senior day, the Islanders will wrap their home schedule on Wednesday, April 30, when they host Houston in a non-conference game at Chapman Field at 3 p.m.
