CORPUS CHRISTI – Texas A&M - Corpus Christi freshman Liz Carter has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week while senior Valerie Perez has been tabbed the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, the league announced today.
"Val and Liz both had great weekends," Head Coach Stephanie Hughes said. "To have the conference honor them with player and pitcher of the week just shows how successful they both were. I am very proud of both of them."
Perez powered the Islanders' offense this weekend to a three-game sweep over Lamar. The senior hit .625 on the weekend with a pair of home runs and six RBIs. She went 3-for-3 in the second game with a home run and five RBIs before going 2-for-2 in the series finale with a home run. For the weekend, she recorded an impressive 1.375 slugging percentage and a .636 on-base percentage.
In the circle, Carter put together a solid weekend against Lamar. She picked up two wins while recording a 0.93 ERA. Carter allowed just eight hits over the weekend and two runs in 15 innings, while recording 10 strikeouts.
It marks the first Southland Conference weekly honor for both Carter and Perez.
The Islanders softball team will travel to College Station, Texas, to take on Texas A&M in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 22. The first pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
