Four-Run Ninth Inning Lifts SFA to 4-0 Victory over Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI – A four-run top of the ninth lifted Stephen F. Austin to a 4-0 victory over the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team today in the final game of the Southland series. The Islanders (10-30, 5-12 SLC) secured the series over the Ladyjacks (17-21, 8-8 SLC) on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep, but came up short today in their fourth extra-inning game of the season.

Dani Tefft propelled the Islanders' offense today going 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases, while hurler Liz Carter went 2-for-4 and made her 29th appearance in the Islanders' circle. Tefft now has a team-high 10 stolen bases on the year. Brittney Morse collected her eighth double of the season with a shot to left field in the fourth inning with two outs to break up SFA's pitcher Carlie Thomas' string of nine retired batters.

After a scoreless eight innings of play, the Ladyjacks tallied four runs on four hits in the top of the ninth. Shalie Day led off the frame with a single to center field, before Nicole Wooten came in to pinch run for Day. After a wild pitch advanced Wooten to second, Katelyn Standley hit a RBI single to left field to score Wooten for the first run of the game. Chelsie Wilson then came in to pinch run for Standley before Brittany Lewis was hit by the pitch. After SFA loaded the bases with an infield single by Heather Hollingsworth, Cadie Weaver reached on a RBI walk, and Wilson scored to tack on the second run for the Ladyjacks. With the bases loaded once again, Lindsay Campbell ripped a two-run single to score Hollingsworth and Lewis before the Islanders pulled out of the frame with a groundout and fly out.

Carter ripped a two-out single to left field in the bottom of the ninth, but Thomas recorded her 10th strikeout of the game to secure the win for the Ladyjacks.

The Islanders looked like they were going to put the first runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the sixth after Carter with the help of the Islanders' defense retired seven straight Ladyjacks in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames. In the bottom of the sixth, Tefft led things off with a single through the left side and advanced to second after Jessica Mendez followed suit with a single to center field. After they both picked up a stolen base, the Ladyjacks however escaped the jam with a strikeout, lineout and groundout to leave Tefft stranded at third and Mendez at second.

Carter (8-16) suffered the loss for the Islanders. The freshman allowed seven hits and four runs, while walking two and striking out one in nine innings.

After dropping the loss in the first game on Saturday, Thomas (11-11) picked up the victory today after allowing eight hits and one walk. She registered 10 strikeouts in nine innings.

The Islanders will return to action when they travel to Beaumont, Texas, to take on Lamar in a three-game series starting on Friday, April 18, at 4 p.m. The two teams will wrap the series on Saturday, April 19, at 2 p.m.
