Islanders Drop Southland Conference Series to Lady Demons
NATCHITOCHES, La. – After several delays from Saturday's heavy rain showers, the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team dropped the second game of the series, 7-1, to Northwestern State. In the third game, the Lady Demons (12-11, 4-2 SLC) outhit the Islanders 11-4 en route to a 10-2 win at Lady Demon Diamond.
The Islanders (7-19, 2-4 SLC) will wrap their six-game road swing when they travel to San Antonio on Wednesday, March 19, to face UTSA in non-conference play. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.

GAME 2: NORTHWESTERN STATE 7, TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 1
After play was suspended on Saturday in the bottom of the fifth, the Islanders and Lady Demons resumed play today at 2 p.m. After jumping out to a 5-1 lead on Saturday, NSU maintained its lead today and added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 7-1.
On Saturday, the Lady Demons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Brianna Rodriguez hit a two-out home run over the right field wall. NSU extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second with three runs on two hits. Cheyenne DelaGarza hit a RBI single to score Kellye Kincannon. Cali Burke then scored DelaGarza and Kayla Boening with a single through the middle.
The Islanders loaded the bases in the top of the third on one hit. Michelle Sorenson started the frame with a walk and advanced to second after Mickayla Cochran reached on a Lady Demon error at shortstop. Dani Tefft then stepped to the plate and ripped a single to right field to load the bases with one out. However, a fly out to center field by Valerie Perez and an 8-2 putout by the Lady Demons pulled the home team out of the inning.
NSU added a run in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 lead. Brittany Virgoe hit a double to center field and scored on a RBI single to left field by DelaGarza.
The Islanders answered with a run in the top of the fifth to trim the deficit to four. Mackinzee Griebel reached on a Lady Demon error and landed on second after a NSU throwing error. After a wild pitch landed Griebel on third, she scored on a Cochran RBI single to center field. Tefft followed with her second hit of the game before Perez hit a pop fly to second to end the inning.
After play was resumed, the Lady Demons padded its lead to 7-1 after scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. Burke hit a two-run home run over the right field wall to score Tara McKenney, who reached on a fielder's choice.
Cochran and Tefft both went 2-for-4 to propel the Islanders' bats while Liz Carter and Griebel each chipped in one hit apiece.
Constance Brandenburg (0-8) suffered the loss for the Islanders. The senior allowed five hits, five runs and three walks while striking out two in three innings.
Kaylee Guidry (3-3) posted the win for the Lady Demons. She limited the Islanders to six hits and one run while walking two and striking out four in seven innings.
GAME 3: NORTHWESTERN STATE 10, TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 2 – 5 INNINGS
The Islanders started strong in the opening frame with two runs on three hits to take a 2-0 lead. With one out, Dani Tefft started the rally with a bunt single and advanced to second on a Lady Demon throwing error. Perez then stepped to the plate and blasted her seventh career homer over the center field wall to score Tefft and give the Islanders a 2-0 lead. It marked Perez's fourth home run of the season and the team's 17th homer of the season.
NSU evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the second with two runs on one hit. Cheyenne DelaGarza hit a two-run double to left field with one out to score Brittany Virgoe and Kellye Kincannon.
The Lady Demons pushed ahead in the bottom of the third with three runs on four hits to take a 5-2 lead. Cali Burke started the inning with a single to left field and scored after Cassandra Barefield hit a two-run homer over the right field wall. NSU plated their fifth run of the game after DeLaGarza ripped a RBI single to right field to score Kincannon, who reached on a fielder's choice.
NSU extended its lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the fourth with four runs on four hits. Brianna Rodriguez hit a two-run double down the right field line to score Tara McKenney and Burke. McKenney reached on a hit by pitch and Burke followed with a bunt single. Brittney Jones then hit a two-run single to center field to plate Rodriguez and Virgoe, who reached on a single through the middle.
In the bottom of the fifth, Kayla Boening hit a home run over the left field wall to give the Lady Demons their 10th run of the game.
Tefft, Perez, Carter and Lindsey Lyles all tallied hits in the loss.
Liz Carter (6-8) took the loss for the Islanders. The freshman allowed six hits, five runs, three of them earned, while walking one and striking out one in three innings. Katie Blanar replaced Carter in the circle in the bottom of the fourth and allowed five hits and five runs while striking out one in one inning.
Kaylee Guidry (4-3) picked up the victory in the circle for the Lady Demons. She held the Islanders to four hits and two runs, while walking one and striking out five in five innings.
