Bryant Trips Up Islanders Softball, 8-2, to Wrap UTSA Mid-Major Classic
SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team and Bryant stayed even early on until Bryant put together a rally in the fourth and fifth frames to win 8-2 today at Roadrunner Field in the final game of the UTSA Mid-Major Classic. The Islanders (3-11) tallied nine hits in the loss, led by Hayley Galloway who went 2-for-3 and Mickayla Cochran who hit 2-for-4, including her third home run of the season.
The Bulldogs (1-4) got on board in the opening frame with one run on one hit to take a 1-0 lead. With out one, Kendall Corder reached on a walk before landing on second on a single by Madeline Velasquez. After a wild pitch put Bulldogs on second and third, Elle Madsen hit a sacrifice fly to Mickayla Cochran in center field to score Corder and put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
With one out in the bottom of the first Cochran answered with her third home run of the season and seventh career homer. The junior sent a 1-1 pitch flying over the center field wall to knot the score at 1-1.
Bryant garnered a 4-1 lead in the top of the fourth with three runs on four hits. Aubrey Mable started the inning with a double to center field and Lauren Keast followed with a single through the right side. Jessica Benacquista then stepped to the plate and hit a three-run home run over the right field wall to put the Bulldogs in front.
The Bulldogs tacked on four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 8-1. Madsen tallied the Bulldog's second home run of the game to start the frame and Hayley Bottino followed with a double to center field before scoring on a RBI single by Mable. Katie Blanar, who came in and replaced Constance Brandenburg in the Islanders' circle, retired the next two Bulldogs before Taylor Burger hit a two-run shot over the left field wall to score Mable.
The Islanders recorded a pair of hits and a run in the final frame. With two outs, Valerie Perez hit a RBI single to right field to plate Dani Tefft who reached on a fielder's choice. Following the play, Brittney Morse, who walked with two outs, was called out at third to end the game.
Brandenburg (0-4) took the loss for the Islanders in the circle. She allowed seven hits and five runs while walking four in four innings.
Madsen (1-2) sealed the win for the Bulldogs. She allowed nine hits and two runs while walking three and striking out one in seven innings.
A&M - Corpus Christi will head to College Station to compete in the three-day Texas A&M Invitational next weekend for their final pre-conference tournament. The Islanders will face Wisconsin, Connecticut and host Texas A&M.
