Islanders Bats Ignite in Fall Softball Sweep
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Islanders softball team swept Coastal Bend College in a fall exhibition doubleheader today at Chapman Field. The Islanders edged out the Lady Cougars 3-2 and followed it with an 8-0 victory.
The Islanders will conclude fall play against Alvin Junior College on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

GAME 1: TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 3, COASTAL BEND COLLEGE 2
The Islanders scored a run in each of the first three innings and held the Lady Cougars off the board until the top of the seventh. Eight different Islanders tacked on a hit to lift the home team to a 3-2 victory.
In the first inning, Mickayla Cochran scored Dani Tefft on a RBI ground out to give the Islanders an early 1-0 lead. Tefft reached on a Coastal Bend throwing error and picked up a stolen base before Cochran came to the plate. Perez tallied the Islanders' first hit of the day with a single through the middle.
In the second frame, Laura Phillips ripped a single up the middle and after Brittany Morse reached on a walk, Jessica Mendez, who came in to pinch run for Phillips, advanced to third on a Cassie Carroll sacrifice bunt. Hayley Galloway then hit an infield single with two outs to score Mendez and pad the Islanders lead to 2-0.
The Islanders added its third run of the game in the bottom of the third on a pair of hits. Tefft led off the inning with a single to right field and Valerie Perez reached on a fielder's choice. J.J. Jackson then stepped to the plate and drilled her first triple of her career to left field to score Perez.
Freshman Katie Blanar received the starting nod in the Islanders' circle and retired 11 straight batters. Liz Carter relieved Blanar in the top of the fifth and didn't allow a hit until the top of the seventh. Coastal Bend recorded four hits and two runs in the frame but the Islanders escaped to win 3-2.
The Islanders out-hit the Lady Cougars 8-4. Tefft, Cochran, Perez, Jackson, Phillips, Galloway, Cassidy Ivy and Lindsay Lyles each recorded a hit in the win.
Blanar recorded two strikeouts and gave up just one hit in four innings, while Carter tallied two strikeouts and gave up three hits in three innings.
GAME 2: TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 8, COASTAL BEND COLLEGE 0
The Islanders' bats exploded for 15 hits in the game while Blanar, Carter and the Islanders' defense held the Lady Cougars to just two hits in the game.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi jumped on board in the opening frame with three runs on five hits to take an early 3-0 lead. Mackinzee Griebel, Tefft, Cochran, Jackson and Lyles all recorded a hit in the inning. Griebel scored on a RBI single by Cochran, and Tefft plated the Islanders' second run of the game on a Perez ground out. Cochran then crossed home plate on a single by Jackson.
The Islanders put up a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings on a combined nine hits. Michelle Sorenson blasted a double to left field and scored on a double to center field by Mendez. Galloway followed suit with a RBI single to score Mendez and extend the Islanders' lead to 5-0. In the fifth, Ivy hit a single to center field and scored on a RBI by Phillips. Mendez then recorded her second RBI of the game with a single to center field to score Carroll who reached on a single up the middle. The Islanders put up its eighth run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on two hits. Carroll registered her second RBI of the game after she scored Cochran on a single through the left side. Cochran hit a one-out single to left field and advanced to second on a Perez walk.
Carter received the start in the Islanders' circle and tallied two strikeouts and allowed just one hit in four innings. Blanar limited the Lady Cougars to just one hit in three frames.
