Islanders' Incoming Class Earn Postseason Honors

CORPUS CHRISTI – Head Coach Stephanie Hughes' first recruiting class to be added to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has had an impressive spring and summer after signing to be an Islander in November.

"We are so excited about this freshman class," Hughes said. "They are a talented group but what I like even more is their work ethic. They are great in the classroom and off the field as well. I look for them to make an immediate impact on our program and help us toward our goal of a Southland Conference Championship."

After Hughes was hired to take over the Islanders program in 2011, incoming freshman Elizabeth Carter (Austin, Texas/Westlake HS) was the first player Hughes saw in her first weekend out recruiting.

Since then, Carter, the 5-foot-10 right-handed pitcher, has garnered numerous accolades. She earned MVP honors at the Austin Area All-Star Game and District 15-5A MVP honors after helping Westlake High School claim the district title. Carter recently sealed a spot on the Texas Sports Writers Association's Class 5A first-team all-state team.

Katie Blanar (Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS) also put together an impressive senior season. The left-handed pitcher helped her Pearland High School Oilers to the regional quarterfinals while being named to the 22-5A Second Team as a designated player. Blanar was also a standout in the classroom. She earned the academic award at Pearland and was tabbed NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete.

Mackinzee Griebel (Lockhart, Texas/Lockhart HS), a left-handed slapper, was recognized for her speedy speed in the outfield. As a senior she earned first team all-district and Defensive MVP honors. Griebel was also recognized in the classroom with academic all-district and all-state accolades.

Brittney Morse (Richmond, Texas/George Ranch HS) was named Offensive Player of the Year and second team for catcher, while Jessica Mendez (Corpus Christi, Texas/Moody HS) earned all-district honors and a spot on the All-South Texas Team.

Emma Stipe (Round Rock, Texas/Cedar Ridge HS) sat out her senior season due to an injury but as a junior she was named MVP, second team all-district and academic all-district.

The Islanders return 12 letterwinners from the 2012-13 team and will begin fall workouts on Monday, Sept. 9, at Chapman Field.
