Softball Drops a Pair of Losses to UTSA in Non-Conference Doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team dropped a doubleheader to UTSA in non-conference action Wednesday at Roadrunner Field. The Islanders (8-33) fell behind early in both contests and were unable to rally, falling 9-1 in five innings in the first game and 5-1 to the Roadrunners (22-19) in the second game.

The Islanders will face Stephen F. Austin in a three-game series starting on Saturday, April 20 in Nacogdoches, Texas. The Islanders will face the Ladyjacks in a doubleheader on Saturday before wrapping the series on Sunday, April 21.

GAME 1: UTSA 9, TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 1 (5 INNINGS)

The Roadrunners jumped out early with a 4-0 lead before putting together a five-run bottom of the fourth to win 9-1 over the Islanders in game one. The Roadrunners tallied 10 hits in the win. Hayley Galloway went 2-for-3 to lead the Islanders' bats while Valerie Perez and Dani Tefft each posted one hit apiece.

Galloway recorded the Islanders' first hit of the game with a single to left center in the opening frame. UTSA answered with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the first. Samantha Beeson tallied a RBI single to score Darian Blake after she reached on a leadoff double to right center and Siera Sproul followed with a two-run homer over the left field wall to give the Roadrunners a 3-0 lead.

UTSA plated another run in the bottom of the second after Courtney Buchman scored on a RBI double to right center by Paige Hamilton. Buchman reached on a leadoff single to center field. The Islanders pulled out of the inning after Perez snagged a pop fly at short stop and Natalie Zarzabal recorded the double play in right field.

Perez collected the Islanders' second hit of the game in the top of the fourth with a dropper to center field.

The Roadrunners extended their lead to 9-0 in the bottom of the fourth with five runs on three hits. After back-to-back walks and a single by Hamilton loaded the bases, UTSA plated two runs on an Islanders' mishap at home plate on a Blake fielder's choice. With Hamilton on third and Blake on second after she advanced on the throw, Beeson hit a three-run home run to give the Roadrunners a 9-0 lead.    

The Islanders put up a run in the top of the fifth on two hits. After a J.J. Jackson grounded out, Laura Phillips reached base on a walk, after Michelle Sorenson came in to pinch run, Tefft followed with a single to shortstop to advance Sorenson to second. Mickayla Cochran popped up to shortstop for the second out of the inning before Galloway ripped a single right behind first base to load the bases. Lindsey Lyles then stepped to the plate and reached base on a hit by pitch to score Sorenson. Perez followed with a fielder's choice but Galloway was out on the force out at third to end the game.

Bethany Slick (1-4) took the loss for the Islanders. The sophomore allowed 10 hits, nine runs, eight of them earned, while walking three in four innings.

Alyssa Vordenbaum (9-8) picked up the victory for the Roadrunners. She allowed four hits and one run while walking two and striking out two in five innings.  

GAME 2: UTSA 5, TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 1

UTSA jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the second and one in each of the third and fourth frames to garner the second game 5-1. UTSA tallied seven hits in the game while the Islanders collected six. Perez went 2-for-3 to lead the Islanders' bats while Cochran, Zarzabal, Meagan McKinney and Jackson all chipped in one apiece.

Perez led the Islanders' bats in the top of the second with a leadoff double through the left side and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by McKinney. After Phillips popped up to first base, Cassie Carroll reached on a walk to put runners on the corners. However, the Roadrunners' pitcher Haylee Staton pulled UTSA out with her second strikeout of the game.

UTSA jumped on board in the bottom of the second with three runs on two hits. Vivian Tijerina scored first on a Hamilton fielder's choice before Buchman plated the Roadrunner's second run on a Blake RBI single to left field. UTSA went ahead 3-0 after Jori Fox scored on an Islanders' throwing error after Beeson flew out to Cochran in center field.   

The Roadrunners added a run in the bottom of the third on two hits and a run in the bottom of the fourth on two hits to pad their lead to 5-0. In the bottom of the third, Islanders' hurler Constance Brandenburg retired the first two Roadrunners, before Victoria Birdwell reached on a single before stealing second base and advancing to third on an Islanders' throwing error. Buchman then followed with a RBI single to right center to score Birdwell. UTSA collected a run in the bottom of the fourth after Blake scored on a RBI ground out by Sproul after reaching on a single.

Zarzabal recorded the Islanders' second hit of the game with a single through the middle in the top of the fifth with two outs. Tefft followed with a walk before Cochran lined out to left field to cap the frame.

The Islanders plated one run on two hits in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Perez cranked her third career home run and second of the season over the left field wall to plate the Islanders' first run of the game. McKinney then drilled her sixth double of the season to right field but was stranded after Phillips grounded out to shortstop.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi tallied two hits in the top of the seventh with two outs. Jackson ripped a single to shortstop and Cochran followed with her sixth double of the season to right center.

Brandenburg (5-13) took the loss for the Islanders. The junior allowed seven hits, five runs, four of them earned, while walking one and striking out two in six innings.

Haylee Staton (10-8) captured the victory for the Roadrunners. She allowed six hits and one run while walking two and striking out six in seven innings.
