Softball Falls 10-2 in Series Finale at Southeastern Louisiana


HAMMOND, La. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team took an early lead in the top of the second after Meagan McKinney hit a solo home run, but Southeastern Louisiana scored 10 runs on nine hits to seal the series finale, 10-2, Saturday afternoon at North Oak Park.

The Islanders (7-26, 2-10 SLC) posted five hits with McKinney, Laura Phillips, J.J. Jackson, Valerie Perez and Dani Tefft all tallying one hit apiece.

The Lady Lions (20-12, 7-5 SLC) were led by Kayla Elswick and Katie Doyle who went 2-for-2. Doyled added two runs while Elswick chipped in 2 RBI.

McKinney put the Islanders on the board in the top of the second when she drilled her third home run of the season and ninth career homer to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Perez recorded the Islanders second hit of the game with a single to shortstop.

The Lady Lions came back in the bottom of the second to plate three runs on four hits to push ahead 3-1. After a ground out, the Lady Lions put runners on first and second after a single and a walk. Lindsey Lyles recorded the second out of the frame with a pop fly at third, before the Lady Lions loaded the bases with their second hit of the frame. Elswick followed with a 2 RBI single through the middle to push the Lady Lions ahead 2-1. Michelle Duhe followed with a single to second base to plate another run and give Southeastern La. a 3-1 lead. The Islanders escaped with two runners left on after Lyles recorded the third out with a 5-3 putout.

The Islanders pulled within one in the top of the fourth with one run on two hits. With two outs, Phillips singled to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jackson followed with a RBI double down the right field line to plate Phillips for the Islanders second run of the game to make it 3-2. It marked Jackson's third double of the season.

Southeastern La. posted two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Megan McCollum hit a leadoff triple to start the frame and scored on a sacrifice foul fly out to Hayley Galloway at second. The Lady Lions plated their second run after a single by Elswick and an Islanders' fielding error. Constance Brandenburg replaced Ashley Elicerio in the circle and the Islanders recorded the next two outs with back-to-back fielder's choice.

With one out in the top of the fifth, Tefft singled down the left field line and advanced to second on a long fly out by Mickayla Cochran in right field. Galloway followed with a line out to third to cap the inning.

The Lady Lions added three runs in the bottom of the fifth on one hit and one Islanders' throwing error to extend their lead to 8-2. Bethany Slick replaced Brandenburg in the circle and faced four batters in the inning. Southeastern La. tallied two runs on one hit and one Islanders' error to end the game in the bottom of the sixth. After a single, a hit by pitch and a fielder's choice loaded the bases, the Lady Lions scored two runs on a walk and a passed ball to end the game.

Elicerio (2-12) took the loss for the Islanders in the circle. The freshman allowed seven hits, five runs, four of them earned, while walking three and striking out one in 3.1 innings. Brandenburg allowed one hit, three runs, two of them earned, while walking one in one inning. Slick allowed one hit, two runs, one of them earned, while walking three and striking out one in one inning.

Taylor Bishop (3-5) picked up the victory for the Lady Lions. She allowed five hits, two runs while walking one and striking out five in six innings.

The Islanders will be in action next when they travel to Beaumont, Texas to take on Lamar for the first time in history. The Islanders and Lady Cardinals will face each other in a three-game conference series on April 6-7 at Ford Park.
