CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team dropped a 5-1 decision to Northwestern State in game three of the series Sunday afternoon at Chapman Field. Northwestern State recorded 13 hits including two home runs and 5 RBI by Cassandra Barefield in the strikeout breast cancer pink game.
The Lady Demons (24-6, 5-3 SLC) got on board in the top of the third with three runs on three hits. Tara McKenney started things off with a single through the left side. After a pop fly, Brianna Rodriguez reached on a hit by pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Cassandra Barefield then drilled a three-run homer over the left field wall to give the Lady Demons a 3-0 lead. Cali Burke followed with a single through the right side before Cheyenne De La Garza walked. With runners on first and second, Carroll pulled the Islanders out of in the inning with a double play.
The Islanders answered with one run in the bottom of the fourth on two hits. After Meagan McKinney grounded out to the shortstop, Phillips ripped a single to third base for the Islanders' first hit of the game. Carroll followed suit with a double to right center to advance Phillips to third. Valerie Perez then reached on a fielder's choice as Phillips was called out at home. With two outs, J.J. Jackson came in to pinch hit and ignited the offense with a RBI fielder's choice to plate Carroll. Michelle Sorenson followed with a ground out to shortstop to end the frame.
Northwestern State put up two runs on three hits in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 5-1. After Rodriguez reached on a one-out walk, Barefield stepped up to the plate and hit her second home run of the game just over the left field wall. Bethany Slick replaced Ashley Elicerio in the circle and the Islanders' defense pulled together to leave three Lady Demons stranded. After back-to-back singles put runners on first and second, Carroll tallied the next out with a force out at third. The Lady Demons then loaded the bases after a walk by Slick, but a putout by Perez pulled the Islanders out of the frame.
In the bottom of the sixth, Carroll recorded the Islanders' third hit of the game. With one out, Phillips reached first base on a walk and Carroll followed with a single behind the circle to advance Phillips to second. Perez then reached on a fielder's choice while Carroll was called out at second. With runners on the corners, the Lady Demons' Brooke Boening recorded her fifth strikeout of the game.
Slick (1-3) took the loss for the Islanders in the circle. The sophomore allowed seven hits and five runs while walking two and striking out one in 4.1 innings. Elicerio relieved Slick and allowed six hits and one walk while recording one strikeout in 2.2 innings.
Boening (7-4) limited the Islanders to just three hits and one run, while walking two and striking out seven in seven innings.
The Islanders will be in action next when they travel to Hammond, La. to face Southeastern La. in a three-game series on March 29-30.
