WACO, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team dropped a doubleheader to Baylor today on the second day of the Miken Classic at Getterman Stadium. The Islanders came up short 4-1 in the first game and dropped a 7-0 second game to the Lady Bears.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi moves to 1-8 while the Lady Bears move to 9-2. The Islanders will take on either Northern Colorado or the University of Pacific tomorrow at 9 a.m. to wrap the classic.

GAME 1: BAYLOR 4, TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 1
Baylor's bats attacked first tacking on one run in the first and fourth innings before taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth. The Islanders answered in the bottom of the sixth but couldn't overcome the Lady Bears' eight hits, dropping a 4-1 loss in the first of two games Saturday in the Miken Classic.
The Islanders tallied a weekend-high five hits led by Meagan McKinney's two hits, including her second double of the season. Mickayla Cochran, Valerie Perez and Michelle Sorenson each collected one apiece to contribute to the Islanders' bats.
The Lady Bears got on board in the opening frame with an unearned run after leadoff batter Kaitlyn Thumann scored on an Islanders mishap after reaching base on a walk. Thumann advanced to third on a Kathy Shelton single to shortstop before plating the Lady Bears' first run of the game.
McKinney got the bats rolling in the bottom of the first with the Islanders' first hit of the game. The senior ripped through the left side and Perez followed with a chopper to center field with two outs. Baylor's Heather Stearns answered with her second strikeout of the inning to pull the Lady Bears out of the inning.
Baylor added another run in the top of the fourth on three hits. Robin Landrith scored on an RBI single by Bailey Chalmers. Baylor tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth with three hits to take a 4-0 lead. Shelton singled to lead-off the inning, before scoring on a Holly Holl double to the left field brick. The Lady Bears collected their fourth run on a Landrith single to right field.
The Islanders' bats got hot in the bottom of the sixth frame. With one out, Cochran blasted her first double of the season to the right field brick. After a Hayley Galloway line out, McKinney followed with an RBI double also to right field to plate Cochran and pull the Islanders within three. However a 5-3 ground out by Perez capped the inning.
Constance Brandenburg (1-4) took the loss for the Islanders in the circle. The junior tallied three strikeouts and allowed eight hits in seven innings.
Stearns (3-1) picked up the victory for Baylor in five innings of work. She allowed two hits while striking out seven batters.
GAME 2: BAYLOR 7, TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 0
Baylor's strong bats continued over into the second game to seal a 7-0 victory. The Lady Bears outhit the Islanders 8-1 to wrap bracket play on the second day of the classic.
The Islanders collected one hit in the opening frame with a single by Cochran to left field to start things. After a sacrifice bunt by Galloway advanced Cochran to second, McKinney reached on an error by Baylor's shortstop. However a punch out and a ground out to Baylor's pitcher Whitney Canion left two Islanders stranded.
Baylor put together a four-run second inning to take a 4-0 lead. After the Lady Bears reached on consecutive hit by pitches, Jordan Strickland advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Clare Hosak reached on a walk before Heather Stearns scored on a wild pitch and Landrith walked to load the bases. The Lady Bears added another run in the bottom of the third on two hits. Linsey Hays led the frame with a triple to the left field brick and scored on a RBI single by Sarah Smith.
Baylor collected two hits and two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-0. Thumann led the inning off with a single to right field and scored on a throwing error on Crockett's RBI to shortstop. A single to left field by Smith plated Crockett to cap the scoring.
Ashley Elicerio (0-4) took the loss in the circle for the Islanders in 2.1 innings. The freshman allowed four hits and five runs while facing 15 batters. Sophomore Bethany Slick came in for relief and allowed four hits and two runs while facing 19 batters in 3.2 innings.
Canion (4-1) sealed the victory for the Lady Bears. She tallied nine strikeouts and allowed one hit in seven innings.
