CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team wrapped the fall season today in a doubleheader at Chapman Field against Coastal Bend College. The Islanders cruised to a 10-2 victory in five innings and followed it with a 2-2 tie in eight innings of play to finish with a 4-0-2 fall record. Over the six fall games the Islanders outhit their opponents 56-24.
Game 1 – Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 10, Coastal Bend College 2 (5 innings)
The Islanders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first extended the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the second after Laura Phillips blasted a three-run double to right field. The Islanders tacked on three more runs to win 10-2 in five innings and outhit Coastal Bend 9-3. Mickayla Heller, Meagan McKinney and Katelyn Bates all chipped in two hits apiece while Valerie Perez and Philips each added doubles and Jamise Jackson singled.
Constance Brandenburg and Ashley Elicerio split pitching duties in the circle. Brandenburg struck out four batters and didn't allow a hit or a run in three innings of work. Elicerio pitched two innings and allowed three hits and two runs.
Game 2 – Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 2, Coastal Bend College 2 (8 innings)
In the second game of the day, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and Coastal Bend were deadlocked at 1-1 through three innings of play until Coastal Bend took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. In the final frame, Perez ripped a double and scored on an error to plate the tying run. Both teams recorded five hits apiece.
The Islanders were powered by Perez who went 2-for-4 with a triple and a double while Dani Tefft and Jackson both added one hit apiece.
Elicerio started in the circle for the Islanders and allowed two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out one in four innings of work. Brandenburg allowed three hits and one walk in four innings of play.
The Islanders will be back in action in the spring for the 2013 season.
