Islanders Belt 32 Hits in Fall Softball Sweep

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team faced UH-Victoria and Texas A&M - International in a doubleheader today at Chapman Field. In the first game, the Islanders outhit UH-Victoria 14-5 en route to a 7-3 victory. In the second game of the day, the Islanders topped Texas A&M - International 13-3, improving their record to 3-0-1 for the weekend. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi outhit their opponents 42-16 over the two days.

Game 1 – Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 7UH-Victoria 3

The Islanders' bats carried over from game two yesterday to outhit the Jaguars 14-5. In the top of the first leadoff batter Mickayla Heller started things off for the Islanders with a double to left field on the first pitch. Lindsey Lyles followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Heller to third. After a Meagan McKinney fly out on just the third pitch of the day, J.J. Jackson singled up the middle to plate Heller and give the Islanders their first run of the day. Valerie Perez followed suit with a single through the left side and Laura Phillips poked a single in front of home plate to load the bases. The Jaguars pulled out of the jam with a strikeout to end the inning.

Cassie Carroll started the second inning with a walk and advanced to second on a Dani Tefft bunt. Lyles walked to load the bases before McKinney singled through the middle to score Katelyn Bates, who came in to pinch run for Carroll.    

The Islanders' strong bats continued into the top of the fourth as the team plated four runs on three hits. Katelyn Potts and Perez both blasted RBI doubles to left center and Phillips followed with a single to center field to plate Perez and pad the Islanders' lead to 6-2.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi added one run in the fifth frame on three hits. Karissa Haleman doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Heller single through the middle. The Jaguars plated a run in the sixth inning on two hits. The Islanders recorded two more hits in the seventh with singles by Haleman and Bates.

Heller, Perez, Phillips, McKinney, Tefft, Jackson, Potts, Bates, Haleman, Natalie Zarzabal and Julia Sanford all tallied at least one hit apiece. Potts, Perez, Haleman and Heller all chipped in doubles.   

Sophomore Bethany Slick and freshman Ashley Elicerio split pitching duties in the circle.

Game 2 – Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 13, Texas A&M - International 3

In the second game of the day, the Islanders' powerful bats lifted them to a 13-3 victory over Texas A&M - International. The Islanders outhit the Dustdevils 18-7.

Jackson highlighted the day with a solo home run in the third. McKinney and Perez each chipped in two hits apiece.

Constance Brandenburg and Elicerio split time in the circle. Brandenburg pitched four innings and didn't allow a run. Elicerio finished the last three innings for the Islanders and gave up just three runs.

The Islanders will wrap their fall season next Friday, Oct. 12, with a doubleheader against Coastal Bend College at Chapman Field. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
