Schwarz Named NCAA Division I Leader in Sacrifice Hits Per Game

CORPUS CHRISTI – Former Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball player Hannah Schwarz has been named the 2012 NCAA Division I statistical champion for sacrifice hits per game. Schwarz led the nation with 0.58 per game and totaled 19 on the year, tying the Islanders school record for most sacrifice hits in a single season.

"Hannah has proven herself to be one of the top playmakers in our conference," Head Coach Stephanie Hughes said. "This honor shows she is also one of the top bunters in the country and a true team player. Sacrificing herself to move a runner is the ultimate unselfish act on the field. She did whatever it took to help the team and it was an honor to coach an athlete of her caliber."

Schwarz will begin her student teaching in the fall and receive her degree in interdisciplinary studies in December.

"Every year brings a new challenge with different obstacles," Schwarz said. "I was happy to be able to be a part of the 2012 Islanders. Our goal is always to compete. I wanted to help my team in any way that I could and I was more than pleased to move runners when the opportunity arose. In order for that to happen that also means I had runners to move. Being in the No. 2 spot was a role I was glad to play. Coach Hughes never stopped believing in me even after my injury. I was happy we could be successful. Cassie Redman did a great job of getting on so I cannot go without saying a big congrats to her. It is never expected to be recognized but it is always a nice honor."

Former Islanders pitcher Greta Cecchetti was also ranked in the 2012 national summary. The Bollate, Italy, native finished in 21st place in hits allowed per seven innings at 4.55. She also ranked in the top 50 in strikeouts per seven innings and top 70 in earned run average.
