CORPUS CHRISTI – Michelle Sorenson, a McLennan Community College transfer will join the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team for the 2012-13 season, Head Coach Stephanie Hughes announced today. Sorenson (Spring Branch, Texas/Smithson Valley) will join the Islanders as a sophomore after playing the 2010-11 season with the Highlassies.
"Michelle will bring an athletic dynamic to our program that I am very excited about," Hughes said. "She is very versatile as a catcher but can also play other defensive positions. Her speed and ability to get on base will help round out our 2012 incoming class."
Sorenson recorded a .358 batting average while appearing in 43 of the 51 games during the 2010-11 season at McLennan under head coach Manuel Ordones. The Spring Branch, Texas, native helped the Highlassies win the Region V championship after placing third in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC). She earned second team all-conference honors. Sorenson sat out the 2011-12 season.
Prior to that, Sorenson was a three-year letterwinner at Smithson Valley High School under head coach Wayne Daigle. She led the Rangers to a 25-2 record while recording a .315 batting average during her senior season. Sorenson helped the team to three consecutive District 26-5A championships while winning the 5A Texas State Championship in 2009. She earned academic all-district honors during her junior and senior seasons while claiming first team all-district catcher her sophomore, junior and senior year. Sorenson played summer league ball for the Texas Royals (2006-2008), The Peppers out of Tomball (2009) and the American Revolution (2010).
Sorenson will join pitcher Ashley Elicerio (El Paso, Texas/Hendrickson) along with three outfielders Natalie Zarzabal (Schertz, Texas/Byron P. Steele), Katelyn Bates (Willis, Texas/Willis) and Dani Tefft (Sugar Land, Texas/Kempner) for the 2012-13 incoming class.
