Schwarz, Cecchetti Earn Southland Conference All-Academic Nods

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team placed two student-athletes on the Southland Conference All-Academic teams, the conference announced today. Senior Hannah Schwarz was named First Team All-Academic for the second consecutive year while senior Greta Cecchetti earned Second Team All-Academic honors.

"I'm so proud of Hannah and Greta," head coach Stephanie Hughes said. "This is a great honor for them because it shows that not only do they excel on the field but in the classroom, as well. They are the definition of a true student-athlete and they are great representatives of our softball program and for the university."

Schwarz, a two-time all-academic selection carries a 3.99 GPA in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on education. After recovering from hip surgery in the fall, Schwarz returned to the Islanders lineup and tied for fourth on the team with 25 hits while batting .245 at 102 at-bats. She led the team with 19 sacrifice hits and started in all 33 games that she played in. Off the field, Schwarz was honored with the Islanders Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award for her superior work ethic in the classroom. She also earned Southland Conference Honorable Mention honors. It was her third year in a row of being recognized by the conference after earning first team accolades the previous two seasons.

Cecchetti, a psychology major with a 3.18 GPA, led the Islanders in the circle this season with an impressive 1.86 ERA, including a 0.53 ERA in the Southland Conference. The senior powered the team with 123 strikeouts in a team-high 109.1 innings. This season against SFA, Cecchetti had one of her most impressive weekends in the circle. In the two games combined against SFA, she struck out 18 Ladyjacks in 11.2 innings of work. For the week Cecchetti totaled 25 strikeouts in 17.2 innings while posting a 1.19 ERA. During the first game, she registered a career-high 11 strikeouts. The senior was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week during the week of March 26 and was named Second Team All-Southland Conference. It is the first academic honor for Cecchetti after transferring to the school two years ago.

The allacademic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/counselors from each Southland institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the allacademic squad.
