CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team will wrap the regular season this weekend when they take on Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La. The Islanders have clinched a spot in next weekend's Southland Conference tournament and will wait their seeding after this weekend's games. The team is looking to snap a four-game losing streak.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi enters Friday's contest with a 16-20 overall record. The Islanders currently are tied in fifth place in the conference with UTSA. The Islanders sit at 10-8 in conference play after dropping games against Sam Houston State and McNeese State. Prior to that, the Islanders claimed its third sweep of the season against Stephen F. Austin. This season the Islanders have swept Central Arkansas and Southeastern La. The Islanders have split with UTSA, Northwestern State, Texas State and UT Arlington. 

Friday's and Saturday's games will be the Islanders final regular-season games .The Islanders are 5-10 on the road and 4-4 in the conference on the road.

On Friday, the two teams will meet for the 16th time with the Colonels holding the 4-11 advantage. Last season the Islanders won two out of the three meetings in Thibodaux, La. The Islanders dropped the first game, 4-0, before clinching the 11-8 victory in the second game. The Islanders wrapped the series with a 3-1 victory.  Greta Ceccheti and Jordan Trujillo picked up the victories.   

 

LAST TIME OUT

The Islanders snapped a six-game home winning streak last weekend, falling to McNeese State on Friday and Saturday. 

On Friday, the McNeese State Cowgirls used a late rally in the final frame to edge the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team 3-2 in the first of two final home games at Chapman Field. 

The Islanders scored first in the opening frame before the Cowgirls took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. The Islanders scored again the fourth to knot the score at 2-2, but McNeese State rallied in the seventh to win 3-2. Both teams tallied four hits while the Cowgirls left seven stranded to the Islanders six. 

Jordan Trujillo (5-6) suffered her sixth loss of the season and fourth in conference play. The senior replaced Cecchetti in the top of the sixth when the score was tied at 2-2 and allowed just one hit, one run while striking out one batter. Cecchetti gave up five hits and two runs while tying a career-high four walks. The senior also recorded four strikeouts in five innings. 

On Saturday, McNeese State's Katie Roux hit a two-out RBI double in the top of the fifth to lift the Cowgirls past the Islanders, 1-0, on Senior Day at Chapman Field. With the loss, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi dropped their fourth straight conference game. 

The Islanders outhit the Cowgirls 4-3 but left eight runners stranded. Jordan Trujillo (5-7) suffered her second straight loss and fifth conference loss this season. In seven innings the senior allowed one run on three hits while striking out four and walking just one batter. Senior Cassie Redman, sophomore Laura Phillips and freshmen Mickayla Heller and Hayley Galloway all collected one hit apiece for the Islanders' bats. 

SCOUTING THE COLONELS

Friday's game will mark the 16th meeting between the two schools with the Colonels leading the series 4-11. 

Nicholls State holds an overall 13-30 record and sits with a 7-11 record in the Southland Conference. The Colonels are led by Ashley Bertot's .385 batting average and a team-high 52 hits.  Ashley Ray is second with a .364 batting average and leads the team with 29 RBIs. 

In the circle, the Colonels are powered by Katie Moulder and Ashton Bennett. They both hold a 3.38 ERA. Moulder (6-15) leads the team with 70 strikeouts in a team-high 141 innings while Bennett (7-10) has tallied 47 strikeouts in 99.1 innings. Rachael Huggins has pitched 16 innings, making her appearance in 10 games.  

SWING BATTER SWING

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi is 15-3 when they out-hit their opponents and 1-14 when their opponent tallies more hits than them. The Islanders are outhitting their conference opponents 111-90. 

HOT BATS

Hayley Galloway is currently riding on a two-game hitting streak. Hannah Schwarz is first on the team with the longest hitting streak of nine and Cassie Redman is second on the team with seven.

The Islanders have rallied from behind this season to clinch six come-from-behind victories. 

POWERHOUSE

Laura Phillips is hitting .385 to lead the offense with a .436 slugging percentage and .537 on base percentage. The sophomore has tallied 15 hits and eight RBIs. Hayley Galloway is second on the team with a .293 batting average and has tallied 22 hits. Galloway leads the Islanders in conference play with a .344 batting average. 

Sandy Schumann leads the team with 24 hits and Cassie Carroll leads the team with 14 RBIs. Schumann, Cassie Redman and Stephanie Vead have all chipped in three doubles. Schumann is the only Islander to tally a triple this season. 

FRESH FACES

Three out of the top five batting averages for the Islanders belong to freshmen. Hayley Galloway, Mickayla Heller and Karissa Haleman have played a big role in the Islanders' offense. 

Galloway is second on the team with a .293 batting average and right behind her is Haleman followed by Heller. Haleman holds a .267 batting average and Heller sits at .265.     

In conference play, Galloway leads the team with a .344 batting average while freshman Katelyn Potts is second with a .333 batting average. Carroll leads the team in conference play with nine RBIs and has also chipped in 12 hits. Cassie Redman leads the team in conference play with 16 hits. 

IN THE CIRCLE

Greta Cecchetti (10-5) leads the Islanders in the circle with an ERA of 1.66 in 18 appearances and 92.2 innings pitched. She has allowed 56 hits and 25 runs while striking out a team-high 103 batters. In conference play she currently holds a 0.53 ERA. Cecchetti dropped her first conference game of the season in six innings against Sam Houston State. The senior gave up five hits while striking out nine and walking two. 

Vianca Pesina (1-7) holds a 5.03 ERA in 15 appearances. She has tallied 31 strikeouts in 62.2 innings. Jordan Trujillo holds a 5-7 record with a 3.33 ERA in 75.2 innings pitched. She is second on the team with 63 strikeouts. Constance Bradenburg (0-1) is second in the circle with a 3.28 ERA in five appearances and 10.2 innings pitched. 

In the first game against McNeese State, Trujillo suffered her sixth loss of the season and fourth in conference play. PRESEASON PICKS

The Islanders were picked to finish second in the Southland Conference, after clinching the regular-season title last season. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi was selected to finish behind defending conference champion Texas State. The Islanders received five first-place votes with 87 points while Texas State received four.              

ALL-SOUTHLAND TEAMS

Senior Hannah Schwarz, returns as a First Team selection for the second straight year after starting 58 of the Islanders 59 games last season. Senior Vianca Pesina returns as a Second Team selection after going 12-5 in the circle with a 2.26 ERA last season, which was sixth best in the conference.

Following Saturday's game the Islanders will wait to see who they will play in the Southland Conference tournament next weekend in San Antonio.
