CORPUS CHRISTI – McNeese State's Katie Roux hit a two-out RBI double in the top of the fifth to lift the Cowgirls past the Islanders, 1-0, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Chapman Field. With the loss, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi drops their fourth straight conference game.
The Islanders (16-20, 10-8 SLC) outhit the Cowgirls (28-17, 11-7 SLC) 4-3 but left eight runners stranded. Jordan Trujillo (5-7) suffered her second straight loss and fifth conference loss this season. In seven innings the senior allowed one run on three hits while striking out four and walking just one batter.
The two teams were held scoreless through four innings of play until the Cowgirls scored one run in the top of the fifth frame on three hits. The Cowgirls' Tiffany Denham, who picked up the victory yesterday in the circle for McNeese State, started things off with a single up the middle. The Cowgirls' advanced her to second on a sacrifice bunt before Trujillo recorded her second strikeout of the game to give the Islanders their second out of the inning. No. 9 batter Katie Roux then answered with a RBI double to left field on a 0-1 count to plate Megan Knippa who pinch ran for Denham. Leadoff batter Claire Terracina followed suit with a single to shortstop before the Islanders escaped the inning with a groundout, leaving Roux and Terracina stranded on second and third.
The Islanders left two runners on base in the third, fifth and sixth innings. In the bottom of the third with two outs, Redman singled to shortstop before she stole second. Hannah Schwarz reached first on an error by the Cowgirls' hurler Bianca Lilly and Redman advanced to third. McNeese State escaped with a groundout to leave Redman and Schwarz stranded on the corners.
In the fifth frame, Heller singled up the middle and Galloway followed by reaching base on an error by the second baseman but was called out at second while Heller advanced to third. Redman walked and stole second to record her 10th stolen base of the season before Lily ended the Islanders threat with a strikeout to end the inning.
Two more Islanders' runners were left stranded in the sixth. Sandy Schumann led the inning by reaching base on an error and with two outs Phillips delivered a solo shot up the middle to move Schumann to third. Cassie Carroll grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.
Lily (2-1) picked up the victory for the Cowgirls in seven innings.
The Islanders will wrap the regular season in Thibodaux, La. when they take on Nicholls State on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5.
