CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team will host its final home series this weekend on Friday and Saturday against McNeese State. The Islanders are currently in third place after dropping a doubleheader to Sam Houston State on Tuesday. The Bearkats snapped the Islanders four-game winning streak and a string of six consecutive conference victories.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi enters Friday's doubleheader with a 16-18 overall record. The Islanders sit behind Sam Houston State and first-place Texas State in the conference rankings. McNeese State sits in fifth place. The Islanders sit at 10-6 in conference play after dropping two games against Sam Houston State. Prior to that, the Islanders claimed their third sweep of the season two weeks ago against Stephen F. Austin. This season the Islanders have swept Central Arkansas and Southeastern La. The Islanders have split with UTSA, Northwestern State, Texas State and UT Arlington. 

Friday's and Saturday's games will be the final homestand at Chapman Field for Alejia Cain, Greta Cecchetti, Vianca Pesina, Cassie Redman, Sandy Schuman, Hannah Schwarz and Jordan Trujillo. The Islanders are 8-5 at home and have won six straight.

On Friday, the two teams will meet for the 27th time with the Islanders holding the 16-10 advantage. Last season the Islanders won three out of five meetings. 



The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team dropped its first Southland Conference series Tuesday in a midweek doubleheader against Sam Houston State at Bearkat Softball Complex. 

The Bearkats topped the Islanders 1-0 in the first game and snapped the Islanders string of six-consecutive conference victories. In the second game the Bearkats outhit the Islanders 11-2 en route to an 8-2 victory. 

In the first game, the Islanders outhit the Bearkats 9-5 but left 10 stranded as Sam Houston State went on to win 1-0, snapping the Islanders six-game conference winning streak. Meagan McKinney led the Islanders' offense for the second straight game. She went 2-for-2 while Jamise Jackson also collected two hits. Cassie Redman, Stephanie Vead, Cassie Carroll and Hayley Galloway also chipped in with one hit apiece. 

Greta Cecchetti (10-5) dropped her first conference game of the season in six innings. The senior gave up five hits while striking out nine and walking two. 

The Bearkats carried their momentum over to the second game of the doubleheader to win 8-2. Sam Houston State outhit the Islanders 11-5 and tallied three home runs to hand the Islanders their first conference series loss. Cassie Redman, Sandy Schumann, Meagan McKinney, Stephanie Vead and Mickayla Heller all registered one hit apiece. 

Jordan Trujillo replaced Bradenburg in the circle in the bottom of the fifth and retired all four batters she faced while striking out three in 1.1 inning. Pesina (1-7) suffered the loss for the Islanders in one inning in the circle. She allowed five hits and six runs. Bradenburg allowed six hits, two runs while striking out two in 3.2 innings. 


Friday's game will mark the 27th meeting between the two schools with the Islanders leading the series 16-10. 

McNeese State holds an overall 26-17 record and sits with a 9-7 record in the Southland Conference. The Cowgirls are led by Claire Terracina's .369 batting average and a team-high 52 hits.  Alanna DiVittorio is second with a .320 batting average and leads the team with 29 runs. 

In the circle, the Cowgirls are powered by Tiffany Denham. She holds a 1.50 ERA and a 10-8 record in 27 appearances. She has tallied 76 strikeouts in 121.2 innings. Bianca Lilly is second on the team with a 2.39 ERA while Meagan Bond is third with a 3.38 ERA. She holds a 15-8 record and leads the team with 137 strikeouts in a team-high 128.1 innings. 


The Islanders are sitting in third place in the Southland Conference standings. The Islanders sit behind Sam Houston State and Texas State with a 10-6 record. 


Texas A&M - Corpus Christi is 15-2 when they out-hit their opponents and 1-14 when their opponent tallies more hits than them. The Islanders are outhitting their conference opponents 103-83. 


Meagan McKinney is currently riding on a five-game hitting streak. Sandy Schumann is on a four-game hitting streak, while Cassie Redman and Vead are on a two-game hitting streak. Hannah Schwarz is first on the team with the longest hitting streak of nine and Cassie Redman is second on the team with seven. 


The Islanders have rallied from behind this season to clinch six come-from-behind victories. 


Laura Phillips is hitting .368 to lead the offense with a .421 slugging percentage and .519 on base percentage. The sophomore has tallied 14 hits and eight RBIs. Hayley Galloway is second on the team with a .290 batting average and has tallied 20 hits. 

Sandy Schumann leads the team with 24 hits and Cassie Carroll leads the team with 13 RBIs. Schumann leads the team with three doubles and has the only Islanders triple of the season. 


Three out of the top five batting averages for the Islanders belong to freshmen. Hayley Galloway, Mickayla Heller and Karissa Haleman have played a big role in the Islanders' offense. 

Galloway is second on the team with a .290 batting average and right behind her is Heller followed by Haleman. Heller holds a .269 batting average and Haleman sits at .267. 

In conference play, Galloway leads the team with a .346 batting average while freshman Katelyn Potts is second with a .333 batting average. Carroll leads the team in conference play with eight RBIs and has also chipped in 10 hits. Cassie Redman leads the team in conference play with 15 hits. 


Greta Cecchetti (10-5) leads the Islanders in the circle with an ERA of 1.60 in 17 appearances and 87.2 innings pitched. She has allowed 53 hits and 23 runs while striking out a team-high 99 batters. In conference play she currently holds a 0.34 ERA. In the first game against Sam Houston State, Cecchetti (10-5) dropped her first conference game of the season in six innings. The senior gave up five hits while striking out nine and walking two. 

Vianca Pesina (1-7) holds a 5.03 ERA in 15 appearances. She has tallied 31 strikeouts in 62.2 innings. Jordan Trujillo holds a 5-5 record with a 3.68 ERA in 66.2 innings pitched. She is second on the team with 58 strikeouts. Constance Bradenburg (0-1) is second in the circle with a 3.28 ERA in five appearances and 10.2 innings pitched. In the second game against Sam Houston State, Pesina, Trujillo and Bradenburg all saw action with Pesina suffering her second conference loss in one inning. 


The Islanders were picked to finish second in the Southland Conference, after clinching the regular-season title last season. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi was selected to finish behind defending conference champion Texas State. The Islanders received five first-place votes with 87 points while Texas State received four.              


Senior Hannah Schwarz, returns as a First Team selection for the second straight year after starting 58 of the Islanders 59 games last season. Senior Vianca Pesina returns as a Second Team selection after going 12-5 in the circle with a 2.26 ERA last season, which was sixth best in the conference. 


Following Saturday's game the Islanders will wrap the regular season in Thibodaux, La. when they take on Nicholls State on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5.
