CORPUS CHRISTI – Senior Greta Cecchetti has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, announced by the conference Monday. Cecchetti earned the honor after tossing two complete-game shutouts this week.
"Greta did a great job this week in the circle for us," head coach Stephanie Hughes said. "To throw 17 straight shutout innings in this conference is an accomplishment, but to do it against Texas State and UT Arlington says a lot about where she has become as a pitcher."
The hurler from Bollate, Italy picked up two wins during the week in the circle for the Islanders softball team. Cecchetti held her opponents scoreless in 17.0 innings, while striking out 12 batters.
On Monday, she shut out the Texas State Bobcats' offense in 10 innings. The senior struck out six Bobcats, while issuing just one walk. With the 1-0 victory, the Islanders snapped the Bobcats nine-game winning streak.
The right-hander propelled the Islanders defense on Friday against UT Arlington with her fourth win of the season. Cecchetti limited the Mavericks to just two hits in seven innings of work while striking out six batters in the Islanders 1-0 win.
Cecchetti (4-3) holds a 3.16 ERA through eight appearances and has recorded 41 strikeouts in 42.2 innings pitched.
"Greta comes out and works hard every day and that work is paying off," Hughes added.
The Islanders softball team will host Houston Baptist in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 27. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at Chapman Field.
