Strong Sixth Inning Propels Islanders Past Northwestern State, 3-1

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team put together a strong sixth inning to edge Northwestern State, 3-1, Saturday at Lady Demon Diamond Complex.

The Islanders (6-12, 2-2) tallied one run in the fifth inning on a Katelyn Potts' homer and two runs in the sixth inning to pick up their first conference road victory of the season and split the series with the Lady Demons.

The two teams remained scoreless through three innings of play until Northwestern State (11-15, 1-1) continued their hitting from yesterday's contest to score first in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tara McKenney mirrored her hitting from Friday's game tacking on the Lady Demons first run of the game. McKenney led off the inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a Blair Beard sacrifice bunt before scoring the first run of the game on a Brianna Rodriguez fly out to right field. Northwestern State put two more runners in scoring position before Cali Burke popped up to Valerie Perez at shortstop to pull the Islanders out of the inning.

The Islanders answered in the top of the fifth frame when pinch hitter Potts blasted a home run to left field to put the Islanders on the board and knot the score at 1-1. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi's powerful bats continued with a Mickayla Heller single to right field with two outs. Cassie Redman walked, advancing Heller to second, before the Lady Demons' hurler Kelee Grimes ended the inning with a strikeout.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi plated two runs in the sixth inning on two hits. Sandy Schumann led the inning off with a bunt single and advanced to second on Jamise Jackson's fielder's choice. Schumann moved to third on Meagan Mckinney's sacrifice bunt and scored the Islanders' go-ahead run when Cassie Carroll ripped an RBI single to left field. With Jackson and Carroll on the corners, Perez grounded out to second base to score Jackson and give the Islanders a two-point cushion. Northwestern State's defense came through to end the inning with an Alejia Cain out.

The Islanders were powered by four hits. Schumann, Carroll, Potts and Heller each chipped in one apiece and Greta Cecchetti (2-3) sealed her first conference victory in the circle in seven innings of work. She limited the Lady Demons to just three hits while striking out five and walking just one batter.

Grimes (5-6) suffered the loss for Northwestern State in 5.1 innings. She allowed four hits, three runs, three walks while striking out eight batters.

The Islanders will return home to host Texas State in a doubleheader on Monday, March 19 at 1 p.m.
