Game Notes

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team will continue their homestand this weekend when they host the Best Western Marina Grand Islanders Classic at Chapman Field. North Dakota, Ole Miss, Texas Southern and Southland foe UTSA will join the Islanders for a total of 11 games at Chapman Field. The Islanders will face North Dakota, Ole Miss and Texas Southern over the three-day event for a total of four games. The Islanders are looking to pick up their first home victory of the season and enter play with a 1-6 overall with all six losses coming against teams ranked in the Top 25.

 

The Islanders are 0-2 at Chapman Field after dropping two games to No. 9/10 Baylor last Sunday. The Islanders started the season 1-3 after competing in the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic and then followed it with a tough 6-5 loss in Austin to then No. 13/19 Texas before falling to the Lady Bears.

 

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi is 15-2 against North Dakota, Ole Miss and Texas Southern, the three opponents they will play this weekend. Coach Hughes earned her first victory when the Islanders won 7-5 over North Texas in the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic. Hughes became the Islanders fifth head coach in program history when she was hired on August 19, 2011.

 

LAST TIME OUT

After two days of battling wet weather conditions, the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team squared off against No. 9/10 Baylor Sunday in the Islanders season home opener. Baylor sealed the first game 6-1 and followed it with a 3-0 victory improving to 6-1 while the Islanders dropped their sixth game against Top 25 opponents to move to 1-6.

 

In the first game, senior Jordan Trujillo took the loss for the Islanders in five innings pitched. She allowed nine hits on six runs while walking three and striking out three. Brandenburg recorded one strikeout in her first inning of action this season.

 

Carroll led the Islanders with two hits while senior Hannah Schwarz and freshman Hayley Galloway each added one hit apiece. In the second game, Cecchetti took the loss for the Islanders in five innings of work. The senior gave up six hits, two runs, one walk while striking out four. Pesina allowed just three hits, one run while striking out two in two innings of work.

Freshman Mickayla Heller recorded the Islanders only hit of the game while redshirt freshman Valerie Perez tallied the Islanders only walk of the game.  

 

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

North Dakota: The North Dakota Sioux enter Friday's game against the Islanders with a 4-5 record and sit at 0-1 on the road. Cami Bennett leads the Sioux with a .419 batting average and 13 hits. Abby Jo Tometich leads North Dakota in the circle with a 0.73 ERA while Lexa Twist is second with 24 strikeouts and a 4.30 ERA. The Islanders are 2-0 against North Dakota with the Islanders sealing both victories in 2010.

 

Ole Miss: The Rebels hold a 4-3 record and are 0-2 on the road. Dallas Hardin leads Ole Miss with a .471 batting average. Kendall Bruning is the Rebels leading pitcher. She holds a 3.35 ERA and is 3-2 in 23 innings pitched. The Islanders and Rebels are even at 1-1 with both games coming in 2006.

 

Texas Southern: The Tigers enter Saturday's games with a 4-3 record with a record of 2-2 on the road. Tenesha Skrine, Danielle Salazar and Katel Stanonik lead Texas Southern with a .500 batting average. Rebecca Villarreal leads the Tigers with a .573 ERA in the circle and is 1-1 in 11 innings pitched. The Islanders are 12-1 against the Tigers with the Islanders claiming both victories last season. On Feb. 24 the Islanders swept Texas Southern 8-0 and shut the Tigers out 12-0 on Feb. 26 to take the season sweep. The Islanders only loss to Texas Southern came in 2001 when the Islanders lost 2-1.

 

2011 ISLANDERS CLASSIC

The Islanders swept the 2011 Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic to win the Championship after clinching all five of their games.

 

PRESEASON PICKS

The Islanders were picked to finish second in the Southland Conference, after clinching the regular-season title last season. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi was selected behind defending conference champion Texas State. The Islanders received five first-place votes with 87 points while Texas State received four.           

 

ALL-SOUTHLAND TEAMS

Senior Hannah Schwarz, returns as a First Team selection for the second straight year after starting 58 of the Islanders 59 games last season. Senior Vianca Pesina returns as a Second Team selection after going 12-5 in the circle with a 2.26 ERA last season, which was sixth best in the conference.

 

TOUGH SCHEDULE

The Islanders will play a total of 40 regular-season games, including 13 of which will be against teams who competed in the NCAA Championship last season.  The Islanders have already competed against four Top 25 teams (Oklahoma St., Houston, Texas and Baylor) and are scheduled to play against No. 17 La. Lafayette. This season the Islanders are 0-6 against teams ranked in the Top 25.

 

BATTER UP

Schwarz led the Islanders offense with a .345 batting average last season. Against Texas the senior tallied two hits and one run. She is currently holding a .333 batting average in four games out of the Islanders seven games.

 

Laura Phillips is second on the team with a .385 batting average. She has five hits, one run and two RBI's in six games. The sophomore was fifth last year on the team with a batting average of .270. 

 

Senior Alejia Cain also has stepped up for the Islanders, posting seven hits and three runs with an average of .304 in seven games. She has also tallied eight putouts and one assist in left field.

 

UP NEXT

After this weekend the Islanders will compete in the Ragin' Cajun Invitational in Lafayette, La. on March 2. The Islanders will compete against Kentucky, Louisiana-Lafayette, Nicholls State and Stephen F. Austin over the three-day event.
