Islanders Softball Upset Bid Falls Short against No. 13 Texas
AUSTIN – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi softball team came up just short in its upset bid against No. 13 Texas on Wednesday night, falling 6-5 against the Longhorns at Red and Charline McCombs Field.
The Islanders move to 1-4 on the year after the setback, which saw them lead as late as 5 2/3 innings before Texas scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead. The Longhorns improved to 6-0 on the season with the victory.
Things looked bleak early on for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, with the Longhorns scoring three runs on four hits to take the first lead of the game.
The Islanders were able to answer back in the top of the second inning, plating two runs on two hits and two Longhorn errors to cut the deficit to one run. Mickayla Heller started the rally with a single to lead off the inning, and then advanced to second base on a Sandy Schumann single to the shortstop. Despite getting two on with no outs, a series of plays led to the Islanders being down to their final out of the inning with Schumann on third and Hayley Galloway on second base after reaching on a fielder's choice.
Hannah Schwarz got the Islanders on the board with their first run after reaching on an error by the third baseman, allowing Schumann and Galloway to score, making it a 3-2 ball game. Texas would add a single run in the bottom half of the inning to extend the lead to 4-2 after two.
The score remained the same until the top of the fourth, with Texas A&M – Corpus Christi tacking on three runs on six hits to take a 5-4 lead on the Longhorns. Schumann started things off with a single to right, but the next batter lined into a double play to quickly put two outs on the board. Alejia Cain then started the two-out rally with a single to the pitcher and a stolen base to get into scoring position. Schwarz followed with a single to put runners on the corners.
Stephanie Vead picked up the first RBI for her team with another single to the pitcher, scoring Cain and closing the gap to one run. After a pitching change, Schwarz and Vead both moved up a base on a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position. Cassie Carroll drove in the second run of the inning with a single to left, scoring Schwarz and knotting the score at 4-4. Laura Phillips then finished the scoring in the inning with a single to the pitcher to make it a 5-4 game, with Vead scoring on the play.
The Islanders were not quite able to hold onto the lead however, surrendering two runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to fall behind by a 6-5 score heading into the final inning.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi tried to mount a rally in the top of the seventh, putting two runners on with outs, but a strike out swinging ended the game in a 6-5 final.
Next up for the Islanders will be a three-game series this weekend against No. 10 Baylor. The teams will play a single game at 1 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m., with all games being played at Chapman Field.
