Softball Signs Three to Class of 2012

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team has signed three outfielders to National Letters of Intent, head coach Stephanie Hughes announced today. Natalie Zarzabal (Schertz, Texas/Byron P. Steele), Katelyn Bates (Willis, Texas/Willis) and Dani Tefft (Sugar Land, Texas/Kempner) will join the 2012 recruiting class.

"I'm extremely excited about the addition of Natalie, Dani, and Katelyn to our program for next season," head coach Stephanie Hughes said. "We filled a need in the outfield positions in these three athletes.  We are graduating a big part of our team next year, especially in the outfield, and at the plate and these three athletes will help fill those holes immediately."

Zarzabal, an outfielder at Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, under head coach Doug Milner, is currently in her senior year with the Knights after earning First Team All-District as a freshman.  In her second year, Zarzabal recorded an impressive .409 batting average, scored 18 runs and notched 20 RBIs. She then followed up with a .365 batting average her junior year while plating 14 runs and adding 21 RBIs.

Zarzabal earned Academic All-District honors as a freshman and junior. She currently plays for the Texas Bombers Gold Fastpitch team.

Bates, is a four-year letterwinner at Willis High School under head coach Stephanie Shelly.

During her sophomore and junior years, Bates guided the Ladykats to the area playoffs. She helped the team to a 23-13 record her sophomore year and only dropped five games to go with a 27-5 record her junior year. Bates competed in the Fireworks All-Star Game in Aurora, Colo., in 2010.

Bates earned First Team All-District honors her sophomore and junior year, while earning Second Team All-County in centerfield her sophomore year and First Team All-County in centerfield her junior year.

During her freshman year, she led the Ladykats in the lead-off slot and started at second base to help guide the Ladykats to a 25-22 record while advancing to the Bi-District playoffs.  She earned Second Team All-District honors her freshman year.

Bates led the team in hitting during her freshman campaign and led the team in stolen bases during her sophomore and junior years. She currently plays for the Montgomery County Elite Gold Fastpitch team.

Tefft is a four-year letterwinner at Kempner High School in Sugar Land under Charity Rychlik.

A four-year starter in the outfield for the Cougars, she led the team with a .434 batting average while helping it win the 2011 Bi-District Championship and the 2011 District 23-5A Championship last season. Tefft earned All-District 23-5A honors during her junior year.  She posted a .467 on-base percentage while recording 25 stolen bases in 28 attempts in the Cougars' 24-13 season.

Tefft played travel ball for Texas KAOS Gold under coach Bert Emanuel and played in the 2010 Premier Nationals and 2009 ASA Gold Nationals.

"These three student-athletes add a combination of speed and power to help boost our lineup and will also keep our program at the top of the Southland Conference in the years to come," Hughes added.
