The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team picked up its first-ever Southland Conference Tournament win and advanced to another game today after winning a 5-1 elimination game against Northwestern State on Friday morning. The Islanders will play the winner of the game between UTSA and UT Arlington at 7:30 tonight for the right to advance to play on Saturday.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi improved to 39-18 on the season while the Lady Demons completed their year at 32-25.
Jordan Trujillo picked up the complete game victory to improve to 15-7 on the year. She allowed one run on three hits while walking three and striking out three.
The Lady Demons got on the board first in the second inning when a batter was hit by a Trujillo pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After moving to third on a wild pitch, the runner came home on an RBI single to make it a 1-0 game.
The Islanders tied the game up in the fifth inning after Stephanie Vead walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cassie Redman. After Sandy Schumann came on to run for Vead, Lauren Sanders walked to put runners on first and second.
Caley Jeter came to the plate and singled to left field to knot the game at 1-1 with two outs. Hannah Schwarz followed with a single to load the bases, but the team was unable to get any more runs in the inning.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning when they scored three runs on two hits to grab a 4-1 lead. Lauren Dodson started things off with a walk and was pinch-run for by Meagan McKinney who proceeded to steal second base. Kacie Smith followed with a single to left to move McKinney over to third base.
After Smith stole second as well, Schumann singled to left for an RBI single and give the Islanders their first lead of the tournament. Redman followed in the order and reached on an error while Schumann and Smith scored unearned and Redman moved to third to make it a 4-1 lead.
They added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Brittany Tucker doubled to center and came around to score as Lauren Dodson reached on an error to make it a 5-1 advantage.
Trujillo closed out the game in the bottom of the seventh to give the team their first-ever Southland Conference Tournament victory.
