Islanders softball team readies for play in Southland Conference Tournament

The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team will try to claim a second Southland Conference Championship on Thursday when they begin play in the Southland Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed with a tournament title and an NCAA bid on the line.

The Islanders come into the series with a record of 38-17 after winning the regular season title with a mark of 21-9 in Southland Conference games. They clinched the championship on the final day of the regular season with a 2-0 win over No. 2 seed UT Arlington.

They will play either No. 4 McNeese State or No. 5 UTSA at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams play earlier in the morning at 11 a.m. for the chance to stay in the winner's bracket and advance to play the Islanders later in the day.

In the season series', Texas A&M - Corpus Christi swept UTSA in the first Southland series while taking 2-of-3 from McNeese State in the third-to-last weekend of the regular season.

Against UTSA, the Islanders won the first game by a 2-0 final before earning a first-day sweep with a 1-0 win in eight innings in the second game. They completed the sweep on the second day with a 9-6 victory to start 3-0 in Southland play. Jordan Trujillo earned two of the victories while Vianca Pesina picked up the other win for her team.

Against McNeese State, the two teams played extra innings in two-of-three games. In the first game, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi played its longest game of the season at 11 innings before losing a 5-3 contest. In the second game of the first day the Islanders took a 4-1 game. The two teams went extra innings again on Sunday as the Islanders picked up a 2-1 win in nine innings on senior day. Trujillo went 1-1 on the weekend while Pesina picked up the middle game victory.
