Junior pitcher Greta Cecchetti has picked up another weekly honor for the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team after being named the Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon by a vote of the league sports information directors. It is her second of the season and she is one of just four players to be honored twice this year while giving her team a league-high five total weekly awards. In addition to her two, Jordan Trujillo and Vianca Pesina have each taken the honor once while Lauren Dodson was named Hitter of the Week earlier in the year.
The Islanders right hander came into Sunday determined to pitch her team to a Southland Conference Championship and she did just that by turning in a championship-winning performance on Sunday as she held UT Arlington to just one hit and two walks while striking out four batters.
Her complete-game shutout clinched the Southland Conference Championship for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the home field of UT Arlington. A native of Bollate, Italy, Cecchetti never allowed a runner past second base the entire game. She improved her season ERA to 1.61 while moving her record to 8-4 on the year.
She has been a presence in the circle particularly during conference play as she has compiled a 6-1 record and a 1.13 ERA against league opponents. She has tossed two of her four shutouts against Southland members, including the one on Sunday.
The win gave the Islanders a 21-9 record in league play, good for the title and No. 1 seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament. The team will be looking to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2005 season. They will have a first round bye before playing at 4 p.m. on Thursday against the winner of the game between McNeese State and UTSA.
