Islanders travel to UT Arlington in search of Southland Conference title

The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team will travel for its final series of the regular season on Saturday and Sunday with a conference title in its sights. The first-place Islanders will take on the second-place Lady Mavs in a series that will determine the regular season Southland Conference Champion as well as the #1 seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi comes into the weekend with a record of 37-15 on the season and are 20-7 in Southland Conference play. UTA is 31-21 in the year and trail the first-place team with an 18-9 record in league games. The teams play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday and end the series with a 12 p.m. start for a single game on Sunday.

Texas State is tied for second along with UTA, but with both teams holding tiebreakers over the Bobcats due to series sweeps, only the two teams involved in the series this weekend can earn the top overall seed. If the Islanders win at least one game, they will clinch the top seed and a regular season championship. If they win two or complete a sweep, they will claim an outright title over both teams. The Lady Mavs must complete a sweep of the visiting team to claim the title.

The teams met twice earlier in the season at the Best Western Marina Grand Invitational in Corpus Christi. The Islanders won both games, taking the first by a 6-1 final on May 11 before earning a 9-0, run-rule victory in five innings the following day.

Leading the team into the weekend will be Hannah Schwarz and her team-best .371 batting average. Lauren Sanders is second on the list with a .351 mark while Caley Jeter (.324) and Stephanie Vead (.318) are also hitting above .300 on the season. Jeter is tied for the team lead with Kacie Smith at 34 RBI on the year. Smith also has a team-high five home runs while Brittany Tucker is second at four on the year. Lauren Dodson is second on the team with 33 RBI while leading the Islanders with 11 doubles, one more than the 10 doubles by Jeter.

In the circle, Greta Cecchetti is leading the team with her 1.74 ERA to go along with a 7-4 record. Vianca Pesina is 12-4 with a 2.11 ERA while Jordan Trujillo has the most wins at 14-6 to go along with her 2.46 ERA. Constance Brandenburg is 1-1 with two saves and a 4.55 ERA for her squad.
